Blake Chambers is the Dean's Award recipient for the School of Technology.

Convocation is bittersweet for Blake Chambers. Though it signals the start of a new chapter in his life, it also brings one to a close.

“Niagara College was a very welcoming school and a constant in my life over the past two years,” Chambers said. “I’ll miss all the friends I’ve made along the way, my professors, and my fellow classmates.”

By the end of the day on June 12, Chambers will not only be a graduate of the Computer Systems Technician-Network and Cloud Technologies Program, he will have also received a Dean’s Award for in recognition of having the highest grade-point average in the School of Technology.

The award is an honour because it acknowledges the hard work and dedication he put into his studies, he said. But having access to helpful resources and supportive professors also played a role in his success.

“My professors at the college were always very welcoming and accommodating and encouraged me and my fellow students to reach out and ask for help or support when needed,” he said. “My program experience was very enjoyable. I learned a lot, as my studies covered a broad range of topics. The highlight of my program was my culminating capstone project, where I had to take all the knowledge gained in my program and apply it to a realistic scenario.”

Chambers reflected on his time at NC in the days leading up to convocation.

Academic achievement: Dean’s Award Winner, School of Technology

What were you doing before attending NC?

I studied (Accounting) at Brock University for one year. I realized that Accounting wasn’t for me, so I joined the workforce for a few years before attending Niagara College.

What led you to study at NC and to your program of study?

I’ve always had a passion for technology, and Niagara College is close to where I live (Stevensville); I didn’t have to unpack my life and travel far away from my family and loved ones to get an education. The hands-on experience and more practical approach to education that Niagara College offers also encouraged me to study here.

Did you have a specific career goal in mind when you enrolled in your program?

When I enrolled in the program, I didn’t have a specific career goal in mind; however, as I began to learn more about networking, I became more invested in it. As of right now, I would like to work as a network engineer one day.

What did you find rewarding about your program?

I found the hands-on experience to be the most rewarding part of my program. Being able to physically manage and configure servers and networking equipment in a lab environment that mimics real situations stood out the most to me.

Do you feel your NC experience has helped prepare you for the future?

My experience at Niagara College has given me excellent first-hand experience working with enterprise-grade networking equipment and software that I would not normally have access to. Niagara College has given me the skills, resources and connections needed for my future.

What have you been doing since you completed your studies at NC?

I’ve been spending more time with my family and friends and studying for CompTIA (Computing Technology Industry Association) certifications.

What’s next for you?

Pursuing my CompTIA certifications and finding a job in my field.
