NC to recognize Trans Awareness Week and Trans Day of Remembrance in November

The week of November 13 to 19 is Trans Awareness Week, followed by Trans Day of Remembrance on November 20. Niagara College is proud to recognize these days of significance, offer learning opportunities, and to reaffirm our commitment as a College to support the Trans community and create a positive space to learn and work.

Trans Awareness Week supports increasing the visibility of the trans community. Trans Day of Remembrance is observed annually and honours the memory of members of the trans community who have lost their lives to anti-transgender violence.

Take part in a learning opportunity

November 13: Learning from Trans Students
2:30 to 3:30 p.m. in W212 at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake and via Zoom

Students and employees are invited to a panel discussion to from trans students at Niagara College about their experiences. The event is hosted in partnership with the CAE, COE and Rainbow Knights student club.

The hybrid event will highlight students’ voices, inviting all of us at Niagara College to consider the role we can plan to create a positive space for trans students. What might all of us need to do in order to support trans students’ experiences and learning at Niagara College?

Counselling support for students
Counsellors and the triage coordinator from HWAS will be available in person in W102 at DJP and remotely as well for students that are attending virtually. Support is available for students in-person in W102 or remotely by contacting 905-641-2252 ext. 4168 to be set them up with a counsellor or triage coordinator until 4:30 p.m. Counsellors will also be available at WC in the afternoon.

November 15: Creating Positive Space – Creating 2SLGBTQIA+ Inclusive and Affirming Environments
10 to 11:30 a.m. in N018 at the Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake and via Zoom

A 90-minute workshop and learning opportunity which offers a safe environment for support staff and administrators to:

  • Become familiar with 2SLGBTQIA+ terminology and inclusive language
  • Better understand the lived experiences of 2SLGBTQIA+ students and colleagues at Niagara College, explore strategies for creating safe and inclusive spaces

November 20: Flags lowered for Trans Day of Remembrance

Flags at both campuses will be lowered to honour the memory of trans people who have lost their lives to anti-transgender violence.
