The Performance clinic and the Niagara College Therapeutic Recreation Activity Centre, known as ‘NC TRAC,’ are celebrating their first year of operation this fall. Both located at the Welland Campus, these centres offer health and wellness services to faculty, staff, students and the Niagara community.

Performance clinic

The Performance clinic offers physiotherapy services for NC staff and students and occupational therapy services for community children with fine motor issues.

The physiotherapy aspect of Performance is run by Niagara faculty member and registered physiotherapist, Kelly Martindale. The clinic has recently added a shockwave machine and a laser machine, both of which are very new to the physiotherapy field. These machines help treat a wide range of injuries, more specifically trigger points, tendonitis, plantar fasciitis, and tennis elbow. This type of treatment is especially beneficial for athletes, allowing them to recover more quickly.

The occupational therapy side is run by NC faculty member and registered occupational therapist Sarah Cole. October marks Occupational Therapy Month in Canada and Performance has already completed assessments for the fourth block of the six week pediatric Fine Motor Skills program.

“We are continuing to focus on fine motor skills development of children as it continues to be a need in the community,” said Cole. “Almost all of our clients are on wait-lists or supplementing these services, so to be able to access these in-demand services at a reduced cost through our clinic is a great benefit.”

The Performance clinic is located in the Applied Health Institute at the Welland Campus. For more information about their services and hours of operation, visit niagaracollege.ca/alliedhealth/program/occupational-therapist-physiotherapist/#performance-clinic.

Appointments can be booked online at niagaracollege.janeapp.com, via email [email protected] or by calling 905-735-2211 ext. 7460.

NC TRAC

NC TRAC offers students meaningful resources and therapeutic recreation activities to promote physical, social, cognitive, spiritual and emotional health. In addition to offering registered programs and special events, the centre is also a place where students can drop in for guided relaxation and meditation, cultural programs, or just to break away from academics and enjoy their leisure time in a stress-free, welcoming and inclusive setting. NC TRAC is located in the Merritt Wing Room M102 at the Welland campus and is open Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

“We strive to incorporate programs and services that promote “healthy bodies and healthy minds,” which is why we’ve brought back Mood Walks this year,” said Carolina Nassar, NC TRAC facilitator and graduate of the College’s Recreation Therapy program. “Mood Walks is a province-wide initiative led by the CMHA that offers people a break from the busyness of their day to help improve their physical and mental health through a short walk.”

Mood Walks run every Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. at the Welland campus only. The meeting point for the walk is the InfoCentre located in the Applied Health foyer.
