Niagara College will play a key role in efforts to monitor and report on the quality of Niagara’s recreational waterways, thanks to a new partnership with Swim Drink Fish, an international charity whose mission is to restore swimmable, drinkable, fishable water, in Canada and around the world.
Hosting the Lake Erie – Niagara Hub, Niagara College, along with the Niagara Coastal Community Collaborative, will host one of five Citizen Science Water Monitoring Hubs, located across the province. Volunteers, including students in the School of Environment and Horticulture, will collect weekly water samples and conduct water quality testing at the Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus, reporting the results to the community.
“Niagara College has been a key contributor to ecological restoration and conservation in the
Niagara community for over 20 years, and we’re pleased to partner with Swim Drink Fish and the
Niagara Coastal Community Collaborative in this groundbreaking project,” said Al Unwin, associate dean of Environment and Horticulture. “Hosting this research hub on campus will give our students valuable hands-on experience doing critical applied research work to protect our valuable recreational water sites right here in Niagara.”
