The NC Cares in a United Way Campaign continues to live up to its name.

Through employee donations and a variety of fundraising initiative, the College raised $40,000 in its 2018 campaign to support the United Way Niagara. The 2018 NC Cares in a United Way Campaign kicked off on Niagara Day in August and wrapped up in December at the President’s holiday reception.

Campaign co-chairs Greg Medulun (vice president, External Relations) and Caroline Triemstra (dean, Community and Health Studies) were pleased with the campaign’s continued success and thanked the College community for their support – those who gave, those who organized and participated in fundraising initiatives, and those who contributed their time and efforts to the campaign committee.

“We are proud to be a long-time supporter of the United Way which plays a vital role in assisting the residents of Niagara,” said Medulun. “Thank you to all who supported the 2018 NC Cares in a United Way Campaign, and a special thank you to our campaign committee who volunteered their time on Niagara Day and beyond.”

“The College community showed tremendous spirit through their support for the campaign, in turn, allowing the United Way to truly make a difference in the lives of so many Niagara area residents,” said Triemstra. “Thank you to everyone who supported the campaign through their generous financial support or through the giving of their time to attend events or volunteer.”

Since NC launched its first campaign to support the United Way in 1991, it has raised about $790,000 for the Niagara-based charitable organization, which raises funds that for local community programs and services to help change lives and create positive change. One in three Niagara residents use a program or service that is funded by the United Way.

“United Way Niagara is grateful for the generosity of employees at Niagara College. As longstanding partners of United Way, the support of Niagara College is essential,” said Mandy Cavasin, campaign manager, United Way Niagara. “The contribution by Niagara College supports over 114 programs delivered by local agencies throughout the Niagara region. The dedication of the United Way committee and staff at Niagara College is so appreciated.”

Fundraising initiatives

Funds were raised through staff and faculty pledges and revenue from various fundraising initiatives including:

  • Niagara Day Campaign launch, raising $24,000 in one day;
  • Poinsettia sales at the NC Greenhouse;
  • Bench To Go Coffee Drives and Oktoberfest lunch sales;
  • Chartwells Pancake Breakfast held at the Welland Campus cafeteria;
  • Olaf’s Pop Up Kitchen;
  • ncLibraries Halloween Spooktacular;
  • Fifth annual Research and Innovation WTF trivia night; and
  • BBAH United Way Luncheon.

Weekly prizes

Giving to a worthy cause also gave campaign supporters an opportunity to win prizes. Those who donated $25 or more were entered into a weekly draw for prizes. In mid-January, a draw was held for the final prize: a six-month parking permit. The winner was Natasha Patrito Hannon.

The United Way Campaign Committee thanks all of its generous supporters.
