NC welcomes record number of students for winter term

Niagara College is projecting a record winter-term enrolment this January. Over 2,000 students are expected to begin their studies at the Welland and Niagara-on-the-Lake campuses as Winter Orientation kicks off the term on Friday, Jan. 4.

“We are thrilled to welcome our new students to experience college life and begin their journeys to success,” said Niagara College President Dan Patterson. “With our student-focused, inclusive approach to applied learning at Niagara College, we continue to attract students from across Canada and around the world to study with us.”

January-start students will take part in activities for a smooth transition to college life beginning at 9 a.m. at both campuses. Students can arrive between 8:30 – 9 a.m. to pick up their swag bag.

Program information sessions kick off the day, offering students the opportunity to find out more about their academic programs, get a head-start on the curriculum and meet faculty and their fellow peers. Sessions will be held at both campuses from 9 – 10:30 a.m.

Co-op information sessions will take place from 11:30 a.m. – noon. MyNC/Blackboard tutorials – to learn how to navigate the college’s portal for grades, fees, admissions and timetables – will be offered at both campuses from 1 – 4 p.m.

Students can drop-in to the Student Services Fair at the Welland Campus (Learning Commons) and the NOTL Campus (Student Commons) from 10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. to learn about the many services available to students on- and off-campus. Student card pick-up will also be available on a drop-in basis between 10:30 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Campus tours will start at the Infodesk of both campuses from 1:00 – 4 p.m. with tour groups leaving every 45 minutes.

“Orientation activities play an important part in helping our students succeed by providing a positive start to their studies,” said Dana Brown, student experience coordinator. “It’s our way of welcoming students to Niagara College, and also helping them feel comfortable and familiar with their programs, our campuses, and college services. It’s also a great opportunity to meet other students who are experiencing college life for the first time.”

Students can also enjoy live music and a free lunch at both campuses from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Additional events will be hosted throughout January by the Niagara College Student Administrative Council (NCSAC) including the return of the NOTL ice rink, karaoke nights, and a winter wonderland at Welland Campus.

The College’s International Division will present additional activities as part of International Student Orientation from Jan. 2-4 (English for Academic Preparation) and Jan. 3-5 (Post-secondary and Graduate Orientation), including, information sessions, fairs and a visit and tour of Niagara Falls.
