Message from Dan Patterson: Our enrolment success

Dan PattersonAs the deep freeze of our harsh winter begins to thaw, our Spring Open House is just around the corner. This cornerstone event allows us to engage with prospective students and our community and takes place on Saturday, March 28 from 10 am to 2 pm at both campuses.

This special Niagara College tradition has evolved in recent years, and has become a popular rite of spring in Niagara. Organizers have lots in store for this year’s edition, with program information sessions scheduled for both campuses, along with tours, interactive displays and more.

For Niagara College, Spring Open House is an opportunity to open our doors to the community, while bringing prospective students and their families on campus for a first-hand look at the programs, people and services that set Niagara College apart – something that has become tremendously important for us.

As I’ve discussed at different times this year, colleges and universities across Ontario and beyond are facing enrolment challenges, and we at Niagara College are not immune.  A declining youth population in many parts of the province is making the postsecondary sector more competitive than ever. Enrolment is the lifeblood of Niagara College; it directly affects our ability to maintain a strong financial position, pursue our strategic goals, and continue to grow.  For us to meet our enrolment targets, we must take advantage of recruitment opportunities like Spring Open House.

As we’ve seen this year through other recruitment events such as College Information Fair and Doors Open, opportunities that allow prospective students to experience Niagara College in person – whether it’s interacting with faculty and staff or experiencing hands-on program exhibits – make a significant difference when it comes to converting successful applicants into NC students.

I want to emphasize that we are all Niagara College ambassadors, each with an important role to play in recruiting and retaining students.  Beyond major events like our Spring Open House, I encourage you to continue to reflect on your role as a Niagara College ambassador in your day-to-day work and how you can influence Niagara College’s continued success.

At Niagara College, every student matters and it is you – Niagara College’s faculty and staff — that will ensure that we meet this challenge, and succeed within this changing postsecondary landscape.
