Niagara College Dental Programs will hold the first of three “Shiny Smiles for All” dental clinics on February 20 in the dental clinic at the Welland Campus. Twenty-four students from five Welland schools, including St. Mary’s, Glendale, Matthews, Princess Elizabeth and Plymouth, will receive assessment and preventive treatment at the clinic. The students have been identified by Niagara Region Public Heath dental professionals, and will be bussed to Niagara College for the clinic.
When they arrive, the children will be paired with second-year Dental Hygiene students, and will receive a complete dental examination from Dr. Mario Filice. The children will also receive dental x-rays, scaling and polishing, oral hygiene instruction and a fluoride treatment, and will be assessed for further treatment.
Now in its seventh year, the Shiny Smiles for All is a dental outreach program designed to assist children who may not have access to dental care. A further preventive and assessment clinic will be held on March 20, and children who require fillings will be treated at a clinic April 19, where a group of local dentists will volunteer their time.
