Linda Maj is going the distance to help conquer cancer – 200 km, in fact.
The faculty member from Academic Studies, English and Communications, will be participating in a two-day bike ride from Niagara Falls to Hamilton and back as part of Enbridge’s Ride to Conquer Cancer. Funds raised from the ride will benefit The Campbell Family Institute at Princess Margaret Hospital, one of the top five cancer research centres in the world.
This will be Maj’s first time participating in the event, to be held June 9 and 10. To prepare, she has been doing yoga and weight training three times a week, as well as cycling a few times a week.
She will be riding with the Steve’s Cycle Paths team, along with her husband. It was his idea to participate, she said, since his boss is co-chairing this year’s event.
Maj decided to join him to support the cause. She is riding for all her friends and families who have fought or are fighting cancer. Two of her 40-something friends have had double mastectomies and, she is also concerned that she or, God forbid, her daughter could be next.
“I just got tired of doing nothing about helping cancer victims and their families,” said Maj.
To be eligible to ride, Maj must raise at least $2,500. She has raised more than $1350 to date.
All pledges are eligible for tax receipts.
