Sail back in time aboard War of 1812-inspired Tall Ship cruise

Niagara College’s Sailing School, offered by its Part-Time Studies department, is offering two new history-inspired cruises to set sail in June, in addition to its annual Twilight and Kids’ Pirate tall ship cruises.

The New Tall Ship 2012 CruiseCommemorating the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812, is an exciting daytime cruise on the Tall Ship Empire Sandy. Guests will sail from Port Dalhousie on Lake Ontario to the Lower Niagara River, along a route that once witnessed some of the most eventful aspects and fiercest fighting of the War of 1812, with noted historian, professor and author Wesley Turner as their guide.

The Tall Ship War of 1812 cruise is available Saturday, June 9 and Sunday June 10, 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (boarding at 10 a.m.) Tickets are $98 including refreshments upon boarding, a mid-afternoon full course meal and coffee/tea dessert.  A cash bar is available to individuals 19 and older.

The Tall Ship Twilight Cruise will be offered Friday, June 8. The evening cruise on Lake Ontario aboard the Empire Sandy sails from dusk at 8 p.m. (boarding time at 7:30 p.m.) to midnight. Guests can enjoy a variety of hors d’oeuvres, appetizers, coffee and dessert, while dancing to the musical sounds of blues group Rich and the Poor Boys. Cash bar is available for individuals 19 and older. The fee is $79.

The Kids’ Pirate Cruise, on June 7 is open to lads and lasses over the age of seven, and their parents. Visitors can dress like pirates and climb aboard the three-masted schooner, the Empire Sandy, for a three-hour cruise. They can be scallywags for the day, take part in treasure hunts and pirate games, hoist the Jolly Roger, listen to sea shanties, and hear the ship’s thundering cannon. A lunch buffet will be served and the cruise features contests and prizes.

The Kids’ Pirate Cruise runs from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (boarding at 9 a.m.). The fee is $48 per person, with group rates available for groups of 10 or more.

All cruises will leave from Port Dalhousie’s East Pier, and will sail rain or shine.
