This weekend, Niagara College will ring in the season with its 43rd annual Spring Showcase.
To be held Saturday, March 31 and Sunday April 1, 2012, the Spring Showcase is one of the college’s most-anticipated annual events, drawing thousands of visitors to its Niagara-on-the-Lake campus for one weekend each spring.
While the event was traditionally held as a plant sale at the college greenhouse, it blossomed through the years into an exciting open house at the NOTL campus, showcasing the college’s enterprises – including the NC Teaching Brewery, The Wine Visitor + Education Centre, Benchmark Restaurant and NC Teaching Spa. This year it will also feature an academic showcase including a Niagara Research open house, interactive college games, and Part-Time Studies opportunities, as well as variety of family-oriented activities, seminars, and demonstrations.
In addition to the popular plant sale held at the college greenhouse, visitors can participate in the student floral competition by voting for the best arrangements, check out interactive displays, watch brief informative demonstrations throughout the day from Practical Horticulture students, and witness an arbor being built by the college’s own Landscape Technician students.
The Canadian Food and Wine Institute will be bustling with activity with a variety of kids’ cooking classes throughout the weekend for children ages seven to 13. Space is limited so pre-register at email@example.com. The Vintage Hotel Culinary Competition will be held Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in HT 112. Benchmark restaurant will feature a special three-course meal both days (call 905-6641-2252 ext. 4619 to reserve from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.). A BBQ lunch will be held Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The brewery and winery will open early at 9:30 a.m., offering complimentary wine and beer samples. Tours will run through the Wine Visitor + Education Centre and the NCT Brewery every hour on the hour, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors can attend Beer School 101 in the brewery, or attend a wine seminar Saturday at 12:30 p.m. in E110.
NC Teaching Spa will feature a Cut-A-Thon Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with all proceeds to benefit Wigs for Kids, and will pamper guests with free mini manicures.
Children won’t want to miss the Reptile Show to be held in Yerich Auditorium (Saturday 3:30-5 p.m., and Sunday 1-3:30 p.m.).
There will be free admission and free parking at the Niagara-on-the-Lake campus from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 31 and April 1.
