About HWAS

Health, Wellness and Accessibility Services (HWAS) offers a diverse range of student services and supports that consists of Student Health Services (health care clinic), Counselling Services (counselling), and Accessibility Services (accommodation supports and services).

Our privacy commitment to you.

HWAS respects your privacy and treats your personal information as confidential. We are committed to keeping your personal information secure, use it only for the purposes we collect it (unless permitted by law) and share it with staff that may be supporting you in HWAS. We share your personal information with the Niagara College staff outside of HWAS on a need-to-know basis.

Our use of accessibility services information:

We collect your personal information to provide accessibility services and support your accommodation. If staff or faculty outside of HWAS need information about you to facilitate your academic accommodations, then HWAS staff will share the specific information needed to enable this. For example, we may share information required to implement accommodations or the fact that you have registered with Accessibility Services to confirm your eligibility for accommodations but would not share medical or disability-specific information.

Our use of health and counselling services information:

We collect your personal health information to provide care and assist in the provision of care. We abide by health privacy legislation that permits us to share your personal information with health care professionals (both at the College and outside the College) for this purpose unless you specifically tell us to restrict our sharing.

Our use of information for risk management:

The College has a duty to its community members to provide a safe environment and has processes to assess risk to the community and initiate an appropriate response. HWAS may disclose information about whether you are receiving supports from accessibility, health or counselling services and your medical needs to support this risk management activity.

We may disclose information if required by law.
  • HWAS may also disclose your information where required by law. For example, HWAS staff must report to authorities when there is suspicion of child abuse, when students indicate that they may pose a significant danger to themselves or others, when a student reports sexual abuse by a health care professional, when the court issues a subpoena for record or testimony.
  • Niagara College protects your privacy and your personal health information. The personal information requested on this form is collected in accordance with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and the Personal Health Information Protection Act. This information is used to provide you with services and supports. Please direct any questions about this process to the Director of Health, Wellness and Accessibility Services. Respectful Space Agreement
  • We at Niagara College Health, Wellness, and Accessibility Services are committed to providing a safe and positive experience to our clients, students and staff. The purpose of the client agreement is to establish a respectful environment when seeking our services. Clients will treat all staff members with respect.
  • Verbal and physical gestures, aggression, harassment, abuse, or destruction of property will not be tolerated. These responsibilities also apply to caregivers and chaperones who might escort clients to their appointments. Should a client engage in behaviors deemed as such, they may be asked to leave our offices and/or appointments may be terminated.
