Findlay has travelled throughout B.C. and across Canada working in Indigenous communities facilitating processes focussed on collective healing.

This is the second time that a group from NC will travel to Coast Salish Territory for a land-based learning opportunity with Findlay and her team.

In July 2023, NC’s Indigenous Education department and the Be World Ready program collaborated to send 12 employees across the country to participate in a similar experience called “Decolonizing Pedagogies.” The opportunity was transformational for participants who were moved and inspired by the people they met and their teachings.

“I am excited to journey alongside my colleagues under the care of Denise Findlay and her team who have developed a program centering ceremony and immersive learning to find meaningful and practical approaches towards reconciliation,” said Leah Hogan, Director, Indigenous Education. “Our experience in Sḵwx̱wú7mesh territory will make space for these important conversations while honouring Indigenous ways of knowing and being, which to me, signals we are ready for the next phase in our TRC work.”

“At the heart of the Gathering Our Medicine program is relationship, creating an intensely transformative experience for participants,” said Maxine Semple, Associate Director, Cultural and Global Engagement. “Land-based learning offers the opportunity to deeply connect with our natural environment – one of our most crucial relationships. The Skwxwú7mesh Úxwumixw community’s unwavering care, commitment, and the demonstrated love they share and honor with the land through relationship left an indelible mark last year. Receiving these teachings from the community is a true gift, and I feel fortunate to be part of this program. I know our EDI catalysts will receive so many more important teachings while with the community this coming week that will support their continued important work as catalysts.

Funded through the Dream Big Fund, this year’s trip is a collaboration between Indigenous Education and EDI and Accessibility (Human Resources) to support those advancing work around the College’s commitment to truth and reconciliation.

Over four days, participants will participate in hands-on learning with and from Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) knowledge carriers and elders, experiencing the pedagogical power and pathway of ceremony, ritual and rites of passage. The initiative is enhancing both the student experience and supporting organizational excellence.

“Niagara College is a place of learning. If a student can increase their understanding of their fitness regime and make informed decisions, then mission accomplished,” explains Coach Frank DeChellis. “The overall goal is to use this technology to enhance and deepen the understanding of the physical activities of our students and student-athletes.”

The Fitness Centres now have ten wearable heart rate sensor armbands that students can sign out and use during their workouts. The sensors connect to mobile devices via Bluetooth and are compatible with many fitness apps. Students can review their heart rates and other metrics from their workouts to help them learn more about their fitness routines and habits and adjust accordingly.

This fall, the Men’s Soccer Team and the Men and Women’s Basketball Teams used wearable performance trackers to monitor heart rate and work output to quantify the training required to compete at a higher level. Athletes can access their data and benchmark their own progress, while coaches can monitor the flow of training, player output at games, and more to help their athletes develop and progress. The data is also being leveraged by athletic trainers to monitor the workload of players with injuries and advise coaches of potentially risky workload trends.

DeChellis explained that they observed varsity soccer players running 11 to 13 kilometers per game, and typically 30% at full speed. Using the performance trackers, coaches were able to break down the number of sprints, average distance per sprint, work rate per position, and team’s overall workload, among other metrics to adjust training and performance to ensure efficiency.

To capture their performance on the field, Athletics and Recreation acquired a portable Pixellot Field camera and 24′ tripod for varsity soccer teams. Coaches can mark plays by categories or game moments using an online tool.

The new technology is supporting the professional development of coaches who can better analyze their approach and become more familiar with exercise science, game stats, and personal performances to deliver more precise feedback for players. I think it will help give students better resources to feel more confident in the lab setting and take that confidence into the clinical setting,” said Riolino.

“I hope it sets a precedent for future nursing education that hopefully ripples into the healthcare industry in general.

Practical Nursing student Marissa RIolino has taken charge of the concept mapping modality of pre-briefing, as a Research Assistant for the study.

Dream Big

NC’s Dream Big Fund is designed to support and cultivate trailblazing ideas that align with key areas of focus in the College’s Strategic Plan, to boost capacity to take advantage of new opportunities, and to advance initiatives in areas including but not limited to:

Student experience;

Programs and services;

Research and innovation;

People and organizational development;

Community partnerships

Fundraising;

Alumni relations;

Learning enterprises;

Experiential learning; and

Co-curricular opportunities.

The Dream Big Fund is a $1-million fund that enables the College to more quickly approve pilot initiatives and activities that further one or more Strategic Plan objectives.

Could virtual reality be the key to boosting a nursing student’s confidence?
