[{"id":2740,"date":"2026-02-23T19:56:46","date_gmt":"2026-02-23T19:56:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/consentiskey\/?page_id=2740"},"modified":"2026-03-02T17:09:54","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T17:09:54","slug":"notall","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.niagaracollege.ca\/consentiskey\/notall\/","title":{"rendered":"Not All \u2013 Male Allyship Campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"callout\"> Not All Men are Allies &#8211; But All Can Be!<\/p>\n<p>The reality is that not all men are perpetrators, but many stay silent when they witness harm.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p>Sexual and gender- based violence affects us all, no matter who you are or where you live.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"bullet-list\">\n<li>Women, girls and LGBTQ2IS people face the brunt of male violence in the form of sexual and gender-based violence.<\/li>\n<li>Men and boys are routinely victimized by other men, and support for men is lacking.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even though most men believe that sexual and gender-based violence is wrong, they still may contribute to environments where this violence is perpetuated when they do not challenge these harmful attitudes and beliefs.<\/p>\n<p>We encourage our NC community to take a stance against gender-based violence! the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and goes until December 10, Human Rights Day<\/strong>. Indigenous women and communities, women\u2019s groups and international organizations have long called for action into the high and disproportionate rates of violence and the appalling numbers of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in Canada.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0In Canada, research shows Indigenous women are 400 per cent more likely than other Canadians to go missing. The only person responsible for committing sexual assault is a perpetrator, but all of us have the ability to look out for each other\u2019s safety. Whether it\u2019s giving someone a safe ride home from a party or directly confronting a person who is engaging in threatening behavior, anyone can help prevent sexual violence.<\/p>\n<h2>Wednesday, December 6:<\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attend the <strong>National Day of Remembrance &amp; Action on Violence Against Women<\/strong> event at Niagara College. December 6th is the anniversary of the Ecole Polytechnique massacre, where an armed man walked into the engineering school where he killed 14 women and injured 10 others before shooting himself. Gender-based violence remains tragically common in Canada. On December 6th we honour the memory of the victims of the Ecole Polytechnique massacre, the thousands of murdered and missing Indigenous women and girls, as well as members of the Niagara community and those around the world who we have lost to gender-based violence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the event we will be joined by four community members who are dedicated in their work to ending gender-based violence. If a friend tells you they\u2019re experiencing gender-based violence:<\/p>\n<ol style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li>Listen to them, and don\u2019t interrupt. People need time to process an overwhelming situation \u2013 moments of silence are okay.<\/li>\n<li>Believe them. It takes courage to talk about GBV. Don\u2019t dismiss their feelings, no matter how small the incident may seem to you.<\/li>\n<li>Let them know it was not their fault. No matter what they were doing, wearing, or saying, GBV is never the fault of the victim\/survivor. Validate their feelings.<\/li>\n<li>Ask how you can help. Depending on the situation, your friend might need anything from a hug to professional support. Don\u2019t assume what those needs are \u2014 ask, instead.<\/li>\n<li>Respect their decisions. It\u2019s up to the person experiencing GBV to decide how they want to respond. class=\"callout\">\nConnect with NC\u2019s Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Coordinator (SVPRC):<br \/>\nIf you have experienced sexual or gender-based violence, abuse of any form, or feel unsafe in a relationship, you can speak with the Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Coordinator (SVPRC). The SVPRC responds to disclosures and reports of incidents related to sexual and gender-based violence and offers safe, inclusive and non-judgmental support. The SVPRC can explain options such as reporting to the police or making a formal report through the College, and help create a safety plan with you. No one at the hospital will call the police without your consent.<\/li>\n<li>Follow-up care and referrals, this may include- counselling services, community support<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A hospital response worker from the Niagara Sexual Assault Centre will be called by the hospital to provide support and advocacy for you and any family members or friends in attendance (if you choose to have anyone present).<\/p>\n<h2>2) What is a Sexual Assault Evidence Kit?<\/h2>\n<p>A Sexual Assault Evidence Kit is the collection of evidence from your body and clothing worn during or immediately after a sexual assault. This evidence can only be collected if the assault happened within the last 12 days.<\/p>\n<p>It is recommended that evidence be collected as soon as possible after a sexual assault. If you are able, try to avoid activities that may potentially damage evidence such as:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"angle-list\">\n<li>Showering<\/li>\n<li>Bathing<\/li>\n<li>Using the restroom<\/li>\n<li>Changing clothes<\/li>\n<li>Cleaning up the area<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is not uncommon to want to do these things following an assault. If you have, that is okay, you can still have the exam performed.<\/p>\n<p>There are several steps to a Sexual Assault Evidence Kit, and it is your choice which steps you would like to have completed and you can say no at any time to any step.<\/p>\n<h2>3) If I make a report to Niagara College, will the police be called?<\/h2>\n<p>The College understands that individuals who have experienced sexual and\/or gender-based violence may wish to control whether and how their experience will be dealt with by the police and\/or the College. In most circumstances, the person will retain this control. A person who has experienced sexual violence may choose not to request an investigation and has the right not to participate in any investigation that may occur. In certain circumstances, however, the College may be required to initiate an internal investigation and\/or inform the police of the need for a criminal investigation, even without the person\u2019s consent, if the College believes that the safety of other members of the College community is at risk. The confidentiality and anonymity of the person(s) affected will be prioritized in these circumstances<\/p>\n<h2>4) Why do some survivors not report an incident of sexual and\/or gender-based violence?<\/h2>\n<p>Everyone responds differently to their own experiences of violence. Some survivors do not formally report to authorities, and some do not disclose to someone they trust due to several reasons; these reasons could include:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"angle-list\">\n<li>Lack of clarity about the types of behaviour that constitutes sexual and\/or gender-based violence, and question if they have been assaulted<\/li>\n<li>Need more time to process what has happened<\/li>\n<li>Concerns about being believed or blamed<\/li>\n<li>Feeling guilt and shame<\/li>\n<li>Fear of institutional sanctions if underage drinking or illegal drugs are involved<\/li>\n<li>Fear of retaliation by the perpetrator or someone known to the perpetrator<\/li>\n<li>Believing that nothing will happen to the perpetrator<\/li>\n<li>Anticipate facing stereotypes and discrimination after previous experiences of racism, ableism, homophobia or transphobia<\/li>\n<li>Worry personal information may be revealed (such as sexual orientation)<\/li>\n<li>Male victims not aware of appropriate supports<\/li>\n<li>Lack of access to, or awareness of, available resources<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>1) If I have been sexually or physically assaulted, where can I go for immediate medical support? An individual who has experienced these types of violence may also disclose to staff when seeking support and\/or academic accommodation. A supportive response involves:<\/p>\n<div class=\"row consent-bubbles\">\r\n<div class=\"col-md-4\">\r\n<div class=\"consent-bubble\">\r\n<span>Listen<\/span>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<!--\/col-->\r\n<div class=\"col-md-4\">\r\n<div class=\"consent-bubble\">\r\n<span>Believe<\/span><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<!--\/col-->\r\n<div class=\"col-md-4\">\r\n<div class=\"consent-bubble\">\r\n<span>Refer<\/span><\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<!--\/col-->\r\n<\/div>\r\n<!--\/row-->\n<ul>\n<li>listening without judgement and accepting the disclosure as true;<\/li>\n<li>communicating that sexual and\/or gender-based violence is never the responsibility of the survivor;<\/li>\n<li>helping the individual identify and\/or access available on- or off-campus services, including emergency medical care and counselling;<\/li>\n<li>respecting the individual\u2019s right to choose the services they feel are most appropriate and to decide whether to report to the Police and\/or the Student Rights &amp; Responsibilities Office;<\/li>\n<li>recognizing that disclosing can be traumatic and an individual\u2019s ability to recall the events may be limited;<\/li>\n<li>respecting the individual\u2019s choices as to what and how much is disclosed about the experience, and;<\/li>\n<li>making every effort to respect confidentiality and anonymity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Refer them to appropriate services who can offer support. Let them know there are options on-campus and in the community, including speaking with the Sexual Violence Prevention &amp; Response Coordinator for support and understanding what their reporting options are.
