Academic Advisement Report (AA Report) <\/i><\/div>\r\n

Individualized plan of study based on the student\u2019s program of instruction that shows courses that have yet to be completed and courses that have been completed.<\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n \r\n

Academic Advisor (AA) <\/i><\/div>\r\n
\r\n

An Academic Advisor assists students in planning their academic path and ensures that they meet all the requirements needed to receive their credential. They also connect students to the many resources that will enhance their college experience and support their success at NC.<\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n \r\n

\r\n\r\n
Academic Completion Plan <\/i><\/div>\r\n
\r\n

An individualized academic plan that is created with an Academic Advisor based on the student\u2019s needs. It takes into consideration course availability, course pre-requisites and minimum requirements to meet OSAP eligibility.<\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n \r\n

\r\n\r\n
Academic Misconduct <\/i><\/div>\r\n
\r\n

A serious offence that takes many forms including plagiarism, the use of unauthorized aids in assignments or examinations and the intentional distortion or fabrication of experimental results or data.<\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n \r\n

Academic Standing (Good\/Alert\/Probation\/Dismissal) <\/i><\/div>\r\n
\r\n

A student must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) to meet standards of satisfactory academic progress to remain in school. Any student not maintaining satisfactory progress toward their program of study can be at risk of being placed on academic alert, academic probation, or being dismissed from the program.<\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n \r\n

Co-Curricular Record (CCR) <\/i><\/div>\r\n
\r\n

The CCR allows students to officially record their participation in approved co-curricular activities to enhance their resume and their academic portfolio. Students can use the CCR to showcase their co-curricular involvement to future employers, graduate schools, and when applying for grants and bursaries.<\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n \r\n

Course Load <\/i><\/div>\r\n
\r\n

The number of courses in which a student is registered in each term. For example, 60% load is required for FT OSAP.<\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n \r\n

Course Outline <\/i><\/div>\r\n
\r\n

A document that describes course content, learning activities and explains what topics will be taught in that course. It will also include the credit hour value, equivalencies, and any prerequisite or co-requisites that the course may have.<\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n \r\n

The number of hours that a course is taught per week. Each course has a specific number of required hours assigned. Courses are offered in 1 \u2013 5 credit hour increments and could sometimes include larger amounts. General Education Elective (Gen. Eds.) <\/i><\/div>\r\n

Mandatory courses in some programs of instruction that are designed to strengthen the student\u2019s essential employability skills, such as critical analysis, problem solving and communication.<\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n \r\n

Grade Point Average (GPA) <\/i><\/div>\r\n
\r\n

A single cumulative number that represents the student\u2019s academic performance. The GPA is the sum of all the course grades multiplied by their respective credit value, divided by the total number of credits.<\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n \r\n

Letter of Accommodation (LOA) <\/i><\/div>\r\n
\r\n

A document that confirms that a student is receiving assistance from the Health, Wellness and Accessibility Services office. This document describes the types of accommodations that a student has based on their individual needs. An LOA can be issued to students with disabilities, either temporary or permanent, for each term that they are attending classes.<\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n <\/div>\r\n\r\n \r\n

Co-ops are paid, hands-on work experience in a student\u2019s field of study. The Co-op Consultant helps to prepare students for their work term, provides job search supports, monitors students and employers throughout the work term, and evaluates submitted forms\/documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A co-op work term is scheduled according to a student\u2019s Program of Instruction (POI) and is sequenced so that an academic term follows the work term. Typically, students will attend the first few terms in classes to receive program specific learning and then participate in a field placement to gain experience in a specific field or career area. Depending on the program, the minimum number of Field Placement hours varies and could either be completed during a block of time or concurrently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Field Placements will enhance the topics learned while in class and provide the opportunity for students to develop practical skills and knowledge. The SRRO contributes to creating a positive student experience while maintaining a safe and respectful environment. All students are expected to act responsibly and uphold standards of conduct that form the basis for good citizenship which includes civility, responsibility and respect. Should an incident occur that violates the Student Code of Conduct, the SRRO supports and aids in the resolution process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, the SRRO plays a key role in addressing sexual violence. Here are some tips to help you to make the best out of the time you study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list is-style-numbers\">\n<li>Find a quiet and comfortable place to study that is free from distractions. Silence notifications on your phone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set a time to study and COMMIT to it. Stop making excuses!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Know your <strong>learning style<\/strong> and adjust how you study accordingly. There are visual learners who learn by seeing, others are auditory learners who learn by hearing and kinesthetic people learn by doing! <strong>Visual learners<\/strong> learn from reading and pictures. Flashcards, charts, and diagrams and colourful study notes are helpful to this type of learner. <strong>Auditory learners<\/strong> learn from lectures and discussions in study groups. <strong>Kinesthetic learners<\/strong> learn best when they are actively involved in the learning process. They like to move around as they study and may want to use a white board to write and erase as they study. Most people like to incorporate a variety of methods when they study.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Organize your study time and block it off in your calendar. Make sure you have all the materials you need before you begin studying.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Know what to study- make sure you reach out to your instructor if you are unsure of the materials being covered. Check Brightspace and the Teaching and Learning Plan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make sure you understand the concepts first before you memorize them. One way to know if you understand a concept is to be able to explain it in your own words.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When you are ready to memorize terms, facts, formulas, and list, use flashcards.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Study the harder materials first when the ideas are fresher.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The night before an exam or big test, it is important to get plenty of rest.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Before you start answering any test questions, quickly scan over the entire test and develop a plan. Ask questions in class.<\/p>\n\n\n\r\n <div class=\"panel is-style-blue pm wfw\">\r\n\r\n\t\t \t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><i class=\"fa-solid fa-pen\"><\/i> Prep for Final Projects and Final Exams<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is procrastination and what causes it?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>To successfully prepare for final projects and exams, you must determine what causes you to PROCRASTINATE or put off doing tasks you need to complete. We tend to procrastinate when we are faced with a difficult or unpleasant task. Often, we put off doing things because we are not confident in our abilities, do not know how to prioritize important tasks, or are disorganized. Sometimes, putting off tasks can lead to increased anxiety and depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can you cope with procrastination?<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>First, list everything you need to do, from most important to least important. Make sure you understand each task and ask your professors well ahead of time if you do not understand something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, make a list of \u201ctime robbers\u201d or things that cause you to waste time, like social media and video games. Use these things as a reward once you complete your tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making a plan for academic success<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you have determined the causes of procrastination, you need to<strong> complete an action plan for academic success<\/strong>. Decide exactly what you need to do and the order you will do it. Prioritizing tasks that are most important and\/or take the most time first. Use a whiteboard, or a calendar to plan what you will do and when you will do it. Some people use a planner on their phone or computers whereas others like to use an old-fashioned planner. If you have something that seems overwhelming, <strong>break it down into smaller chunks, <\/strong>to be completed over several days. For instance, if you have a project due, schedule small chunks of time over multiple days to complete it. This will allow you to complete your project and keep on top of all your other studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Complete one task at a time,<\/strong> being mindful that you may have multiple courses to complete assignments and exams in. Plan to do the harder things first when you are fresh and alert. If you have an important test the next day, prepare for that first. Then you could schedule some time to work on an important assignment. Any other time you have blocked off for school could be used to complete smaller tasks. Remember to schedule time for yourself as well! You need time to eat, sleep, exercise and socialize as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Motivate yourself to get started!<\/strong> Motivation builds the closer you get to completing a task. Mustering enough motivation to get things started can be the biggest challenge. Once you have started a task, you will find the task easier to work on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Give yourself a time limit. <\/strong>Put a firm time limit on how long you will give yourself to work on a task. Dragging unpleasant tasks out only promotes procrastination. A time limit encourages you to finish the task faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Disconnect from social media and unnecessary technology! <\/strong>Social media and video games are a breeding ground for procrastination. Limit yourself to using only the technology you need to complete your task. Turn off notifications so that you do not get distracted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Teamwork is dreamwork! <\/strong>Study groups are a fantastic way of studying. Review important concepts, formulas, and ideas. Prepare flash cards and quiz each other. Discuss difficult material together and share notes. Working with others makes everyone accountable.<strong>Ask questions! <\/strong>Reach out to your instructors if you do not understand. Do not be afraid to ask questions in class or email your professors. If your instructor gives you a review package, a test outline or study guide, use this to create questions that could be on a test or exam. The tuition deposit <strong>counts toward tuition fees<\/strong>. Courses with a \u2018W\u2019 grade are not included in your Grade Point Average. Additional rules for dropping a course can be found in the link below.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you do not drop a course on or before the correct date, you will be assigned a final grade for the course.  Final grades will become part of your student record and will remain on your transcript. Requests to remove these grades because you were not attending will be denied.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Please note that dropping a course may impact your OSAP funding.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>International students should take extra care when dropping courses as it may have an impact on their student visas. You\u2019ve made it to the mid-term of the semester. In some classes, you may now be preparing to write mid-term exams.<\/div>\r\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-p-vlarge\">Please note, not all courses have mid-terms exams. Please refer to your Teaching and Learning Plan to see if a mid-term exam is part of your evaluations.<\/p>\n\n\n\r\n <div class=\"panel is-style-blue pm wfw\">\r\n\r\n\t\t \t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"acf-innerblocks-container\">\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><i class=\"fa-solid fa-edit\"><\/i> Prepping for Mid-Terms<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you do have a mid-term, preparation is key. Trying to tackle the content of an entire course overnight will leave you stressed, exhausted, and less likely to perform well. Make a study schedule and tackle a little bit of content each day. For some students, this means using a visual timer, for others, creating a study group has been helpful. Students with an LOA will also want to connect with their instructors well in advance of their mid-terms to gain access to the Test Centre, or extra time, if this is included on their Letter of Accommodation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter what study method you use, be sure to take breaks to give your mind and body time to process the information you\u2019ve been learning. Be sure to get back to it though! Distractions are everywhere, so setting timers, having an accountability buddy, or limiting access to devices is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If, at any point, you find you are feeling overwhelmed with the process, or in need of support, please come connect with your Academic Advisor or your International Student Advisor. We have numerous resources we can direct you to. Please see the link below as a starting point. Sometimes taking a class at another time is an option. Be mindful of the \u2018Last Day to Withdraw Without Academic Penalty\u2019 date. It is especially important that you communicate with them on anything you need support with. Some topics to discuss with your professor include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"is-style-arrows wp-block-list\">\n<li>Asking for clarification on assignments and tests<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Missing a class or deadline<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Struggling with group exercises<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accommodations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Your professors are here to support you in your learning. If you have questions related to course content, they are going to be the subject matter experts you need to gain knowledge and credit in your classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professors can connect with students online, in person, and via appointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each Instructor will have their own style of teaching, and communication requirements. Some may hold open office hours, while others may require an appointment. Even within your program area, styles may vary. It is important to establish and maintain a working relationship with each Instructor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instructors’ contact information can be found both in the Employee Directory (see below) and in Brightspace. Niagara College will regularly send important communications via email. It is also the way many Instructors, classmates, the Student Association, and all support staff (like your Academic Advisor or International Student Advisor) share essential information with you. Checking your email frequently and reading the messages, as well as staying on top of announcements in Brightspace, is an important part of student success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Brightspace<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Brightspace is the learning management system that Niagara College uses. Students will use Brightspace to: access course information and content; keep track of deadlines, tasks, and important course updates; access and upload assignments and tests; and review grades and receive feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each of your Instructors will use the features of Brightspace differently. It will be important to learn how to navigate this system so you can complete assignments, review your grades, and remain an active participant in your class. Every Instructor is expected to post a copy of the <strong>Teaching and Learning Plan<\/strong> \u2013 the schedule of what will be taught when, and important dates and deadlines \u2013 on Brightspace.
