Academic Discipline: Alert, Probation and Dismissal

Academic Alert, Probation and Dismissal are covered by the Program Progression and Graduation Policy. The full policy can be found on our Policies website – view the policy.

Academic Alert

  • Degree and Graduate Certificate students are placed on Academic Alert if their GPA is between 50-64% OR 65% + with one or more missing courses.
  • Diploma and Certificate students are placed on Academic Alert if their GPA is between 50-60% OR 60% + with one or more missing courses.
Next steps:

If you are missing one or more courses from your previous term this may affect your ability to progress through your program without interruption. Follow-up with your Academic Advisor to discuss how this will impact you and your academic plan moving forward.

Academic Probation

All students are placed on Academic Probation if their GPA is between 40-49%.

Next steps:
  • If you are placed on Academic Probation you may be required to complete specific remedial activities. If performance is unsatisfactory at the end of the probationary period, students may be withdrawn from the program or counselled to consider other ways of continuing their education. A probationary student will be notified in writing of their status by the appropriate Academic Administrator or designate.
  • If you are missing one or more courses from your previous term this may affect your ability to progress through your program without interruption. Follow-up with your Academic Advisor to discuss how this will impact you and your academic plan moving forward.
  • Academic Probation can impact your eligibility to proceed to your co-op term. As stated in the Program Progression and Graduation Policy, “A student must maintain an academic standing of either ‘good standing’ or ‘academic alert’ in order to proceed to a co-op work term. Academic eligibility is based on the two terms immediately prior to any work term.”
  • Students receiving OSAP should follow-up with the Financial Aid office regarding any questions or concerns about status and future funding.

Academic Dismissal

All students with a GPA less than 40% or who have spent 2 terms on Academic Probation will be withdrawn from their program. A student who is academically dismissed will be notified in writing of their status by the appropriate Academic Administrator or designate.

Next steps:

If you have been dismissed from your program and would like to be readmitted you should meet with your academic advisor to review your options.

  • If you are re-entering the first semester or a new program you will apply through www.ontariocolleges.ca.
  • If you are entering a level beyond your first term you will need to meet with your Academic Advisor to discuss steps to return, and your academic plan.
  • Students receiving OSAP should follow-up with the Financial Aid office regarding any questions or concerns about status and future funding.
