Niagara College's Workforce Development unit provides applied research and faciliative services to employers, unions, community organizations, and sectoral groups that want help in understanding and bridging the links between the labour market, education and training, and work.
Our two primary aims are to enhance productivity and employability. Each project relationship is designed to develop a commitment to action. Niagara College's Workforce Development unit has responded to the different needs of the new work environment with a different kind of service - a comprehensive service that links quality research to meaningful action.
Niagara College's Workforce Development unit has serviced sectoral clients, employers and community organizations since 1990. Our client list includes the Sectoral Skills Council of the Electrical & Electronics Industry, Canadian Steel Trade and Employment Congress, Ministerial Advisory Committee on Plastics, Ontario Aerospace Council, the Sign Association of Canada, Service Canada, Niagara Training & Adjustment Board, Centre for Community Leadership, the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, and General Motors of Canada.
Corporate Training Services at Niagara College are registered to ISO 9001:2000 Standards. We have established an effective record of serving clients at all stages of workforce development via our four core services:
Applied Labour Market and Social Research The primary aim of all our research is to develop our workforce, whether employed, unemployed, underemployed, or those entering or re-entering the workforce. Through our research process, which follows a cycle of planning, observing, reflecting and acting, client commitment and capacity evolve by gradually increasing their participation and responsibility as each project advances. Using a variety of complementary research methods (including interviews, surveys, content analysis, and demographic analysis) we not only facilitate the diagnosis of problems but also identify the conditions for project success.
Facilitative Services Frequently as a component of responding to research findings, and on occasion as a stand-alone service, we are asked to facilitiate interventions. Specific facilitation techniques are selected from a wide and complementary array of approaches and applied within the context of the desired outcomes and the participants' criteria for success.
Instructional Design and Program Evaluation The Workforce Development unit is unique in its focus upon learning rather than training. We believe that the workplace environment needs to be supportive of learning as a continuing and natural element of daily work. Our approach to instructional design, which includes formal, self-guided and natural learning strategies, builds upon the unique characteristics of learning within the workplace. It also supports the application and development of new knowledge and skills within the workplace.
Information Sharing There is a significant demand for information about workforce issues. Job seekers need to know where their best job prospects lie and how to best prepare for success. Employers need to know how to attract and retain a productive workforce. Equipped with solid information, educators, community service providers, and government agencies can fine tune their programs to meet their clients' true needs. The Workforce Development unit strives to inform all relevant stakeholders and facilitate the transformation of information into knowledge and action.
Niagara College's Workforce Development unit is committed to the long-term economic health of the Niagara Region. We are staffed by knowledgeable and skilled people who live and work in the Niagara Region and take pride in knowing that our research and development initiatives clearly resonate with the perspectives of all the players that effect or are affected by the outcomes of our service. Our inclusiveness and commitment to community underpin our success in translating workforce research into productive workplaces.
