Centre for Students with Disabilities
Niagara College endorses fair and equal access for students with disabilities. The Centre for Students with Disabilities at Niagara College offers assistance to individuals with documented disabilities in order to ensure that they are provided equal opportunities to demonstrate their academic competence. Any student with a disability who is admitted to the College is invited to contact one of our offices to discuss our services. A student with a disability may have one of the following:
Service Eligibility In order to receive service from our office, you must have a disability and be able to provide us with documentation about your condition. (see Documenting your Disability below) If you have a learning disability, we would find it very helpful to review, in addition to your psycho-educational assessment, your elementary and high school report cards, IEP, IPRC notes and any other documents pertaining to your strengths and weaknesses. Make sure you ask for help from your resource teacher or guidance department, before the end of the school year, in order to get all this information. We urge you to identify yourself to us, either by emailing or calling our office. We usually meet new students in August to discuss their needs. If you have not heard from our Centre by the last week of August, please contact our office. Early Identification If you are a student with a disability, early self-identification is an important step on your journey to success. This allows the Centre for Students with Disabilities to help you better prepare for entry into your course of studies. The earlier you ask for assistance, the more effective we can be in facilitating the appropriate support. Accommodations are not retroactive. Do not wait until you are experiencing serious academic difficulties to contact us. Please note: Even if your high school teacher or parents called on your behalf to get information about our services, we still need you to identify yourself to our office and make an appointment with a counsellor. Remember, it is YOUR responsibility to contact us and provide documentation pertinent to your disability. Documenting your Disability The Centre for Students with Disabilities has a specific mandate to provide accommodation(s) to students with disabilities. Therefore, when requesting our assistance, you need to provide us with a written confirmation of your diagnosis and/or the nature of your disability. Because the Centre deals with a wide variety of disabilities/conditions, it is important that you provide your disability counsellor with as much information as possible so that we can understand your needs. To receive appropriate accommodation(s) and to ensure that you benefit from every opportunity to succeed, the following type of information would be helpful: (as appropriate)
Please request that your documentation, reviewing the above information, be on letterhead paper, dated and signed. When visiting your health professional, you may find it helpful to bring a copy of this section with you as a reference. Accommodations Assistance, available through our offices, may relieve academic or social barriers and help you to more readily adjust to college life. Even though you are responsible for meeting academic requirements, we can help in a variety of ways. Examples of accommodations available include:
