Environment :
Niagara College offers environmental faculty and students the opportunity to work with local industry partners on real-world projects through course-based assignments and applied research initiatives.
An area of growing importance and new research opportunities, Niagara College’s environmental and related programs in GIS, horticulture, and greenhouse enjoy infrastructure second to none. The College has several ecological “living labs” in the grounds and environs of the Niagara-on-the-Lake campus, with lagoons, wetlands and trails adjacent to the protected biosphere of the Niagara Escarpment. Niagara Research focuses on ecosystem restoration, energy management, waste management, post-restoration planting and monitoring, site and habitat remediation, and watershed management using wetland bio-filter systems.
Infrastructure:
- Environmental, chemistry, computer and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) labs
- Ecological "living labs" and environmental monitoring facilities
- Wetlands and trails along the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO recognized biosphere
- State-of-the-art equipment and software
- Unique team of student research assistants and volunteers, the Niagara Environmental Corps (NEC)
- Campus Greenhouse Effluent Characterization and Treatment Options
- Niagara Environmental Corps (NEC)
Areas of Research Include :
- Ecosystem assessments and monitoring methods
- Energy management
- Post-restoration monitoring
- Site and habitat remediation (ecosystem restoration)
