In this course, you will be provided with an introduction to the democratic system of governing ourselves in Canada. The nature of the Canadian political culture and the core institutions that provide the infrastructure for our system of government will be examined by you. The societal setting in which most political activity originates including regional economic cleavages, the Quebec question, Aboriginal and other ethnic issues, and the increasing importance of external forces will be examined. You will explore different types of organizations and will observe the interaction of each government level. The democratic electoral and legislative processes will be discussed as you explore the impact on the government by public opinion and special interest groups.
