College Key Performance Indicators

OSAP Performance Indicators

The following tables contain the key performance indicator results for graduation rate, employment rate and OSAP default rate, by college program for the past three years. The approved program sequence (APS) number is assigned to each approved program by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

Statistics show data for the following types of programs:

  • One year Ontario College Certificates
  • Two year Ontario College Diplomas
  • Three year Ontario College Advanced Diplomas
  • One year Ontario College Graduate Certificates

A common methodology has been used for the calculations for all program-related information provided by all colleges. Graduate Employment Rate

The graduate employment rate includes those students who graduated from a program at Niagara College during the reporting year (August to July). Graduates are surveyed six months following graduation to gather information about their employment or educational status at that point in their careers. The telephone survey is conducted by an independent survey consultant contracted by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.

Graduation Rate

The graduation rate calculation is based on the tracking of individual students from their entry point to the college on a full time basis, to their graduation from the college, normally in the program they entered. A group of students who entered a program in a particular reporting period will be identified and tracked to their graduation date. Some accommodation is made to account for students who change programs within the same college.

Unfortunately, what the overall program or college graduation rate is unable to accommodate or take into account are legitimate reasons for students to not graduate within a "normal" time period from their programs. Such reasons include:

  • Students who find employment in their area of study prior to graduation. They often return as part-time students, completing their program later
  • Students who spend some of their program time at Niagara College and then transfer to another college or a university
  • Students who interrupt their studies for personal, family, or other reasons, and return later
  • Students who take their studies in a part-time mode

OSAP Default Rate Statistics

This data shows the number and percentage of students who took out OSAP loans and were in default of those loans six months after graduation. For purpose of calculating institutional default rates, student loan recipients/defaulters are assigned to the last institution/program they attended. The data does not indicate students who may have begun to repay loans at a later date.

To illustrate, the 2006 default rates reflect the repayment status of students who were issued Ontario Student Loans in the 2003-2004 academic year and completed or exited their studies by 2004-2005. For purpose of calculating institutional default rates, student loan recipients/defaulters are assigned to the last institution/program they attended in 2003-2004. The status of these loans was assessed as of July 2006.
