Participants are needed for fitness assessments at Niagara College

Staff and students from the Exercise Science for Health and Performance program are seeking more than 80 people to participate in fitness assessments at the Welland Campus during the fall and winter terms. As there are a variety of fitness assessments available to choose from, anyone is welcome to apply.

Fitness assessments include: body composition/body fat percentage, aerobic fitness (VO2max or submaximal testing), musculoskeletal assessments, and lactate threshold testing. All tests are free except for lactate threshold testing which is available for $50.

Participants will be able to assess their current fitness levels and work with a student trainer to develop an exercise prescription to help reach their goals.

Time slots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Fall term testing date options are Thursday, November 30 from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m.; Saturday, December 2 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or Thursday, December 7 from 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Dates for the winter term will be confirmed once schedules are finalized.

Body Composition Assessment

Our body composition testing calculates your percentage of body fat and lean body weight to fat mass ratios. Cost: Free.

VO2max Test

Each client will receive a wealth of information about their training status from this test.

People can do the test on our Woodway Treadmill or our Monark Bike. This type of testing incrementally measures your oxygen consumption, carbohydrate and fat burning efficiencies as well as ventilation, heart rate, speed and power.

Based on the data obtained, our clients will receive individualized heart rate zones, thresholds, training zones for cycling or running as well and recommendations for program design.  Cost: Free.

Submaximal Fitness Assessment

Should a maximal test or lactate test be outside your comfort zone, our students can also offer submaximal testing for determining your aerobic and musculoskeletal fitness, posture assessment and recommendations for program design.  Cost: Free

Musculoskeletal Assessment

A variety of assessments may be completed to determine your muscular strength, endurance, power and flexibility. The selection will be chosen based on your fitness goals. Cost: Free.

Lactate Threshold Test

The blood lactate test is an incremental test used to determine your own individual anaerobic or lactate threshold (LT). This test can be done using our Woodway treadmill or a Monark bike. This type of testing is important for determining your individual training zones and monitoring your training status. You will receive a report that includes your thresholds and recommended training zones. Only small fingertip samples are required using a lancet. Cost: $50.
