The Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus was buzzing with activity on July 25 as Commercial Beekeeping students participated in the first honey harvest of the season.
Program coordinated Mylee Nordin noted that 12 students participated in the harvest. They task involved taking frames of honey from the colonies, removing the wax cappings, and extracting the honey from the honeycomb frames.
“The students in the beekeeping program learn the fundamentals of honey harvesting, best practices and how to set up a honey extraction line,” said Nordin.
More than 500 pounds of honey was extracted and the students will work on filtering and jarring the honey during the next few weeks.
The honey from the day’s harvest is expected to be available for purchase at Benchmarket (located behind the NC Greenhouse at the NOTL Campus) in late August.
