It’s Level Up time for the College’s Game Development students.

On April 5, three teams from NC’s Game development program will be participating in the Level Up Showcase at the Design Exchange (234 Bay St.) in Toronto. The seventh annual event shines the spotlight on Ontario’s most talented postsecondary students in game development who use the latest technology and platforms to make video games – including VR, motion sensing and more.

Bringing together 14 postsecondary schools to celebrate homegrown talent, the showcase is the only event of its kind. Growing each year, it is the biggest Toronto event for players, developers, and recruiters to get the inside scoop on the future leaders of the games industry.

A can’t-miss event for those interested in game innovation in Ontario, it is open to the public, inviting attendees to play games created by postsecondary schools across the province. The event will be held from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

For the teams of NC students, participation is part of the Games Development program’s final year project. Students must conceive, plan, pitch, design and develop an original game concept and promote their game at the Level Up showcase. Each team is comprised of six to eight students.

NC’s Game Development program coordinator Rick Goertz noted that participating in the event is beneficial for the students.

“It showcases the students’ original game productions to industry professionals in a tradeshow type atmosphere, and brings postsecondary Game Development students together to share game creations,” he said. “It’s the culmination of an intense development effort – a realistic game promotion demonstration experience for the students showcasing their games.”

Other participating schools include Algonquin College, Brock University, Centennial College, George Brown College, Humber College, Laurentian University, OCAD University, Ryerson University, Seneca College, Sheridan College, UOIT, University of Toronto and York University.

Niagara College is one of the event sponsors for the 2017 Level Up. The event is co-hosted and organized by Algonquin College, the University of Toronto and the Digital Futures Program at OCAD University in partnership with Ubisoft Ontario.

This will be the seventh year for the annual Level Up Showcase, and the fourth year that NC students have participated.

Previous participants games have been nominated for international awards and commercially released including: Runbow (204), 13AM Games, Pitfall Planet (2016) Bonfire Games, and Arkin (2017) Ravensword Industries.
