The Niagara Region is hosting the Special Olympics Ontario Provincial School Championships from June 12 – 14, 2017.
The Niagara Regional Police Service is a strong supporter of Special Olympics Ontario hosting many Law Enforcement Torch Run fundraising events throughout the year. In 2016, Ontario Law Enforcement agencies raised $1.9 million for Special Olympics Ontario and the athletes.
The Provincial School Championships games are a culminating end for secondary students with an intellectual disability, who have qualified to compete through one of 64 regional qualifiers throughout the school year. The Provincial School Championships offers competition to over 800 student athletes in the sport of basketball, bocce, floor hockey, soccer, and track and field. Each sport offers a Unified Division where teams will be comprised of students with an intellectual disability and their mainstream peers. The games will be hosted at Brock University and various City of St. Catharines facilities.
In support of Special Olympics, the Niagara Regional Police Service is a host partner for the games and is playing a significant role in the planning, coordination and fundraising for this major event. As you can appreciate, an event this size cannot occur without the support and financial assistance of the community and volunteers.
As the honourary chair for the games NRPS police chief Jeffrey McGuire is calling for volunteers from Niagara College that would be interested in participating in the organization of these games. View the Sub-Committee Summaries Final which outlines the eight sub-committees for the event including an overview of their responsibilities.
