Niagara College’s Canadian Food and Wine Institute (CFWI) will soon welcome celebrity chef and Food Network host Michael Smith.
Smith will visit the CFWI, located on the College’s Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus, on Wednesday, February 27. Culinary students from Niagara College, as well students from select secondary schools from across Southern Ontario, have been invited to attend a 90-minute presentation at the College’s culinary theatre. Smith will speak to students about becoming chefs and offer advice about entering the food industry.
“It is an honour to welcome Michael Smith, who is not only one of Canada’s most recognizable chefs, but who is also dedicated to speaking to culinary students across the country,” said Jon Ogrzylo, dean of the Canadian Food and Wine Institute. “His visit is an opportunity for culinary students at the CFWI, as well as those visiting from high schools from across the province, to enhance their learning experiences and inspire them to strive for excellence as they prepare to enter the field.”
“I am thrilled to be visiting one of Canada’s outstanding culinary programs and looking forward to spending time with our future culinary leaders,” said Smith.
Secondary students attending the event include culinary students from Kernahan Park Secondary School and St. Catharines Collegiate (St. Catharines); Lakeshore Catholic (Port Colborne); Eastdale Secondary School (Welland); Saint Paul Catholic High School (Niagara Falls); St. John’s College (Brantford); White Oaks Secondary School (Oakville); St. Peter Secondary School (Peterborough); Loyola Catholic School (Mississauga); Danforth Collegiate and Technical Institute (Toronto); and Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School (Burlington).
The presentation will begin at 1 p.m. and include a question-and-answer period for students.
Following the presentation, Smith will be guided on a tour of the College’s Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus and the Canadian Food and Wine Institute – including the NC Teaching Winery, the NC Teaching Brewery and Benchmark (the College’s teaching restaurant).
