A battle between wine and beer is brewing once again at Niagara College’s Canadian Food and Wine Institute.
The CFWI will host its second Caps, Corks and Forks event on March 23. Two new teams of students from the college’s Teaching Winery and Teaching Brewery face the challenge of providing the best pairings to match the event’s elegant six-course dinner menu, to be prepared by the college’s culinary students. At the event, guests will have an opportunity to sample, savour and vote for their favourite pairing after each course – after a little coaxing by both teams who will address the crowd to defend their selections. In the end, only one team will reign supreme.
The CFWI’s new signature event, which made its debut in February 2012, sparked a playful rivalry between students of the two programs. It culminated in a narrow victory for the wine team, which won with the greatest total number of votes overall after a 3:3 tie.
“After experiencing the tremendous success of our first Caps, Corks and Forks event, new teams of culinary, wine and beer students wanted a chance to showcase their skills for our communities,” said Jon Ogryzlo, dean of the CFWI. “I absolutely loved round one of this unique event when the wine students won by a fraction, now our beer students have vowed to make a comeback and take the trophy at the end of the night.”
Ogryzlo, who got a sneak peek at the exceptional six-course menu, recommended that guests book early. “Chef-professor Tony de Luca and our team of culinary students are preparing exceptional evening sure to excite your palate,” he said. “It promises to be a fantastic food, wine and beer night.”
The second Caps, Corks and Forks event will take Friday, March 23 at 6 p.m. at Benchmark Restaurant, located at the college’s Niagara-on-the-Lake campus.
