Maps, suitcases and sombreros decorated the upper level SAC lounge, hinting at what the future holds for Shirley DeBeau as friends and colleagues gathered to bid her farewell in late December.
A retirement celebration was held Dec. 20 for DeBeau, who ended her 17-year career at the college Dec. 23. Visitors wrote parting messages to DeBeau and added them to a scrapbook featuring numerous photos of DeBeau with her NC friends.
DeBeau began working at NC in 1994 working in the Continuing Education Department before moving to the International Department where she worked as the Administrative Assistant for the VP of International.
As she begins the next chapter of her life, DeBeau says she looks forward to travelling, playing golf, and spending more time at home. She may consider part-time work in the future.
Leaving her NC years behind, DeBeau says she it is the people that she will miss most.
“I’ll remember all my friends and colleagues at the college. I’ve built great relationships with them,” she says.
