C3 Conference - College Chemistry Canada The Venue The Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus of Niagara College was built on the border of Niagara-on-the-Lake and St. Catharines in 1998. It is a 114 acre property beside the Welland Canal and between the Queen Elizabeth Way and the Niagara Escarpment. It is home to programs in Business, Mechanical Engineering, Hospitality and Tourism, Environment, Horticulture and Winery and Viticulture. It has a restaurant, a greenhouse retail centre, a wine store, a residence accommodation for 202 students, and of course, a pub! The Setting Early settlers were dependent on the flowing water in the Niagara Region. The families that set up mills on these watercourses controlled the only source of power readily available at that time. Everyone needed these mills to grind their grain into flour, manufacture textiles and produce lumber from logs. Niagara streams are named based on their distance from the US border. This distance was an important factor for people using the Underground Railroad to escape slavery in the American south. Proximity to the border also contributed to our military history. Everyone knows that Laura Secord, heroine of the War of 1812 walked 32km to warn Lt. Fitzgibbon that the Americans were planning to attack. There are 20 museums and two reconstructed forts in Niagara, celebrating our rich roots. The Niagara Region has a long history of industrial activity. Proximity to large water bodies for transportation, raw materials, cooling water and unfortunately, waste disposal lead to the development of chemical and manufacturing operations. Today greater emphasis is on treating effluents to prevent damage to the natural environment and companies actively practising pollution prevention initiatives are proud to showcase their efforts.
