Student Strike Relief Fund

About

The Student Strike Relief Fund was established to assist students who have experienced incremental or unexpected expenses as a result of the province-wide faculty strike. The fund is consistent with the framework developed by the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development in consultation with student leaders and all Ontario colleges.

Eligible Students:

All full-time domestic and international students who remain enrolled in the Fall term, including Second Career and Apprenticeship students are eligible to apply to the Student Strike Relief Fund.

Important Note: students who withdraw from their program/course by December 5, 2017 and receive a tuition refund are not eligible for additional support from the Student Strike Relief Fund. For further information regarding withdrawing please contact Enrolment Services at the Welland Campus (Room L24) or Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus (Room W107) or via phone at 905 735-2211 ext. 7500.

Eligible Expenses:

Students will be eligible to receive up to $500 for unexpected, incremental costs. Incremental costs are additional expenses incurred by a student only as a result of the strike. Examples include:

  • Incremental travel costs, i.e.:
    • A bus pass for January that you wouldn’t have otherwise needed
    • Travel to complete the semester in January when you wouldn’t have otherwise
    • Costs associated with flight changes or cancellations due to the strike/extension of term required by the college
  • Living expenses including food, housing and transportation, i.e.:
    • Costs associated with extending rentals or leases due to the extension of the term
    • Additional food due to the extension of the term
  • Incremental child care expenses, i.e.:
    • Payments for childcare outside of the times you had already made arrangements
  • Other incremental expenses, i.e.:
    • Essential expenses that occurred as a result of the strike that you would not have had otherwise.

NOTE: Students must complete the application form and include supporting documentation as evidence of eligible costs. Documentation may include train ticket change fees, rental agreements, receipts for childcare expenses, a letter from a landlord or copies of post-dated cheques. Eligible expenses are those that have been incurred – not those that are anticipated. Expenses cannot be considered until they have been incurred and documentation is available. The application process will be available until the end of the Winter term, which is April 27, 2018 for most programs.

OSAP

Payments received via the Student Strike Relief Fund will not impact OSAP funding or eligibility. In assessing Student Strike Relief Fund applications, the College may consider other forms of financial aid the student receives for living expenses (OSAP, Second Career).

Payment

Approved payments will be made by cheque.

Appeals

The appeals process for the Student Strike Relief Fund will be approved in consultation with the Niagara College Student Administrative Council (NCSAC).

Applicants whose claim is denied, or those who dispute the amount approved (if less than $500) can appeal the College’s decision once. Appeals must be submitted in writing within 15 days of the College’s original decision. Written appeals must be submitted to Enrolment Services at the Welland Campus (Room L24) or Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus (Room W107).

How to apply

Applications for reimbursement must be submitted to Niagara College no later than the end your Winter term, which is April 27, 2018 for most programs. The review of applications will begin December 6.
