Niagara College is responding to a demand from international educators and students to offer a formal graduate certificate program in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL).

This two semester program will incorporate both Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) and Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), providing theory and practical applications for teaching English to learners with various backgrounds and at all levels of English proficiency.

In order to ensure our graduates have the practical skills they need to be successful classroom teachers, two extensive practicum components are integrated with academic study. The practicum components include observation and classroom teaching experience. Students get regular exposure to ESL classrooms to build confidence and experience in language teaching. During Practicum 9006 students observe 20 hours of class time and teach 10 hours with an experienced classroom teacher. In Practicum 9012 students are placed with a teacher and gain an additional 10 hours of observation and 10 hours of in class teaching experience.

For graduates planning to teach in the Ontario elementary or secondary school systems, please note teaching credentials as defined by the Ontario Ministry of Education are required.

The program will provide for academic study and practical applications, including a 30-hour practicum in semester one and a 20-hour practicum in semester two. Niagara College will offer practical placements on the campus, as well as with partner institutions, such as local school boards. International practicums may also be arranged.
