Apprenticeship/Trades Exemption Testing (APPR)
The Apprenticeship Branch of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development (formerly MTCU) has authorized community colleges to administer trade exemption testing for apprentices and non-apprentices.
Apprentices may challenge within their community colleges the in-school portion of apprenticeship levels of the trade-specific apprenticeship program depending on their level of expertise and time spent on the job. Non-apprentices can likewise challenge the in-school portion of the program starting at level one.
The exemption tests are based on the formal instruction requirements for an apprenticeship program.
To be eligible to write an exemption test, the apprentices or non-apprentices must possess the entry requirements for the trade. Minimum age to write the test is 16. Trade-specific standards and entry requirements can be obtained from the local Apprenticeship Branch of the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development Training Office at 519-653-5758 or http://www.collegeoftrades.ca/.
