After graduating from the Paramedic program, Brandon Mackay went on to accept a Paramedic position with Niagara Emergency Medical Services. Brandon continues to work for Niagara EMS full-time, and additionally has returned to Niagara College to assist current Paramedic students in the lab and ambulance field setting in the Paramedic program.



Career Opportunities

From gunshot wounds to severe burns to precipitous childbirth, primary care paramedics are trained to handle it all. This program will prepare you to respond to emergencies of many kinds.

Graduates can work as primary care paramedics for Ontario ambulance services and are eligible to write their provincial examinations.

Qualifications gained in this program enhance applications to police and fire departments. Future opportunities include further training to become flight paramedics or advanced care paramedics.

Admission Requirements

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, including the following required courses:
    • English - any Grade 12 (C) or (U), or equivalent.
    • Biology - Grade 11 (C) or (U) or Grade 12 (U).
    • Chemistry - Grade 11 (U) or Grade 12 (C) or (U) OR
    • Physics - Grade 11 (U) or Grade 12 (C) or (U).

Additional Requirements for Admission:

  • Pre-admission testing.
  • A full Class G driver's licence.

Recommended Courses and/or Recommended Skills (Not Required for Admission):

  • Medical Technologies - Grade 12 (C).

Selection and Ranking Process:

  • For competitive programs (the number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of available places), selection will be based on the highest senior level final grade available at the time of ranking. Mid-term grades are not used for ranking purposes.
  • Ranking for selection is based on:
    • prior academic performance
    • pre-admission testing.

Note:

  • Secondary School grades from co-op courses and half credit courses are not considered.

Program Requirements

Criminal Record Check:

  • Students must provide a certificate of a clear Criminal Record Check prior to placement beginning in Term 2. According to the Ambulance Act, all employers require a criminal record check as a requirement for appropriate field placements and subsequent employment. Documentation for criminal record checks will be completed on orientation day by the program.

Health Requirement:

  • The confidential Communicable Disease Surveillance form must be completed and mailed, faxed or emailed to Niagara College Health Services prior to the first day of Term 1 . Requirements include proof of immunity to varicella, measles, mumps, rubella (2 doses), hepatitis B and tetanus diptheria. Students also must provide date of last pertussis immunization. Influenza vaccination is required annually for paramedic students. Documentation of a 2 step TB test is required prior to start of program and documentation of a 1 step test is required prior to year 2.
  • In accordance with the Ambulance Act, all Emergency Medical Services (EMS) placement sites require current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certification. CPR needs to be current (within a one-year period) and will have to be renewed annually during the program. Valid CPR and First Aid certificates are due at orientation day.
  • All costs associated with CPR/First Aid, vaccinations and/or verification, are the responsibility of the student.
  • All health requirements must be met one month prior to the start of the placement term or a placement will be denied.

Student Uniform:

  • Students are required to wear a student paramedic uniform; black steel toe and shank shoe/boots. The uniform will be purchased during Term 1.

Transportation:

  • Students are responsible for their own transportation in order to complete field placement requirements. Niagara College cannot guarantee placements that are readily accessible by public transportation. Students are responsible for all costs connected with such transportation.
