Projects and Features

Term Six Project Work Summary

Students work in teams, under the mentorship of faculty, on a capstone IT project. The project can be developed at the college or on-site at the discretion of the project sponsor. Students may develop a new system or enhance an existing application.

Community Care Access Centre (CCAC)

Community Care Access Centre (CCAC) Niagara is a $50 million publicly-funded health care corporation dedicated to home health care, long term care, and school age children throughout the region. Various managers at CCAC use a key application, called “The Occurrence Database”, to track the quality of service that is delivered by their providers to the community.

Audrie Galloway, Manager of the Finance & Systems Department, and Pam Creighton, Manager of Information Systems & Technology, approached our department to have a team of term six students upgrade the Occurrence Database from an MS Access application to a web-based platform using ASP.Net and SQL Server. Because of the scope and complexity of this project, we assigned seven students to this team.

The students did an excellent job of completing a detailed analysis of CCAC’s system and have successfully implemented all of their recommended solutions. We appreciate the continued connection with CCAC; in the past, they have hired some of our students for co-op work or full-time employment.

EckerTech Inc.

EckerTech Inc. focuses on building business-to-business (B2B) web solutions, connecting distributors to the purchasing divisions of local companies/organizations. Jeremy Eckert is the president of the company and has also been a generous resource to our department: he hired one of our students, who also completed coop work for EckerTech this fall. This term six project is an extension of coop work and includes the following details: using Cold Fusion, MySQL Server, Linux Redhat, and OpenVPN, our term six student will build a backend management site for vendors and distributors to manage orders, returns, catalogues, and user groups.

Niagara Research
Niagara Research provides solutions for businesses, industry, and the community through applied research & development, and knowledge transfer. They are part of the corporate sector of Niagara College.

We have been pleased to establish a connection with Niagara Research through student, graduate, and faculty work experiences. Conducting a term six project for this division of the college is a new venture for our department. In this project, students will use Apache, MySQL, PHP, Subversion, and RapidSVN to build a web server and open source website. The purpose of the website is to host open source projects, whereby developers from around the world can work and collaborate on building software applications
