About This Certificate

If you are bilingual and have a desire to become a spoken language interpreter, this on-line training can help you develop the skills to interpret in a variety of legal, health care and social sectors in Ontario, for the thousands of immigrants who access these services yearly.

Program Delivery

Individual courses are open to all students whether or not they are working toward the certificate.

Prerequisites may be required for these courses. Please refer to individual course descriptions for specific requirements.

Important Notes

Students must possess an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.

Students must be fluent in reading, writing, speaking and understanding English and a foreign language.

Career Opportunities

Trained language interpreters usually work as self-employed contractors who offer their services on a part time basis in various setting including health care, social services and the legal system.

Certificate Benefits

In cooperation with the offices of Information Niagara-Hamilton, trained interpreters’ names are entered into a provincial data base which connects them with partnering agencies throughout the province of Ontario.

Obtaining Your Certificate (Application for Graduation)

Upon completion of all requirements, the student must complete an “Application For Graduation” form available from the Registrar’s Office.

If the student wishes to have their certificate presented to them at convocation ceremony in the Fall, there is a $25 fee.

Application, accompanied by fee (if applicable) must be forwarded to Registration and Records, Office of the Registrar before the application deadline.
