About This Certificate

A credential designed to enhance the education and skills of law clerks already in the profession, expand the knowledge of experienced legal secretaries, and provide the basic academic foundation needed if you are planning a career as a law clerk.

Final exams can be written at the completion of each course to become a graduate of the Institute of Law Clerks of Ontario (ILCO) Associate level program.

Program Delivery

Individual courses are open to all students whether or not they are working toward the certificate.

Prerequisites may be required for these courses. Please refer to individual course descriptions for specific requirements.

Important Notes

Institute of Law Clerks exams may be written after the completion of each course. There is an additional fee to write each examination.

The program is intended for those with a minimum of Grade 12 and experience in the legal field.

This certificate is now offered ON-LINE ONLY.  All In Class courses are replaced by On-line courses, but will still be accepted toward completion of this certificate program.

  • LAWS1025 Law Clerks - Real Estate  is replaced by LAWS1035
  • LAWS1027 Law Clerks - Estates is replaced by LAWS1036
  • LAWS1028 Law Clerks - Litigation is replaced by LAWS1038
  • LAWS1031 Law Clerks - Corporate Law is replaced by LAWS1037

Note - Courses in this certificate are only offered in the Fall and Winter terms. 

Career Opportunities

This certificate prepares graduates for the challenges of law clerk positions within legal offices and government offices, and law offices of corporations.

Obtaining Your Certificate (Application for Graduation)

Upon completion of all requirements, the student must complete an “Application For Graduation” form available from the Registrar’s Office.

If the student wishes to have their certificate presented to them at convocation ceremony in the Fall, there is a $25 fee.

Application, accompanied by fee (if applicable) must be forwarded to Registration and Records, Office of the Registrar before the application deadline.
