About This Certificate

An introductory, structural approach to the development of skills required to speak French as a second language at the basic level.

Emphasis is placed on vocabulary, grammar and comprehension, together with an introduction to formal conversational French.

This certificate is beneficial for travelers and business personnel, and is often used for application toward language credit requirements in certain university degree programs.

Program Delivery

Individual courses are open to all students whether or not they are working toward the certificate.

Prerequisites may be required for these courses. Please refer to individual course descriptions for specific requirements.

Career Opportunities

This certificate prepares individuals for business or career applications whereby basic French language written and oral communication skills are required to function in workplace settings or in business-related travel.

Possible career paths include:

  • Business or Professional Careers Requiring a Basic Bilingual Component
  • Teacher’s College and other university degree programs (i.e. for 2nd language credit requirements)

Certificate Benefits

Graduates of this certificate program will be eligible to further enhance their bilingual acumen by pursuing the next level of available training in certificate plan # C2048, French as a Second Language – Advanced.

Obtaining Your Certificate (Application for Graduation)

Upon completion of all requirements, the student must complete an “Application For Graduation” form available from the Registrar’s Office.

If the student wishes to have their certificate presented to them at convocation ceremony in the Fall, there is a $25 fee.

Application, accompanied by fee (if applicable) must be forwarded to Registration and Records, Office of the Registrar before the application deadline.
