About This Certificate
This is an advanced program for the professional development of aspiring sommeliers. It has been designed to provide sommeliers with the necessary skills and knowledge to develop, design and implement specific wine programs for a variety of establishments.
This includes acquiring knowledge in food and wine pairing and having expertise in spirits and other beverages and how they relate to food.

To apply to the program, please submit a resume, credentials, and a cover letter indicating your background in wine study and work experience via email or by mail.

Program Delivery
The courses in this certificate are offered in class. Program traditional begins in August with applications being accepted commencing in February of the current year. Applications must be received by the end of June.
In the event applicants do not meet the prerequisites for entrance into the program, they may be recommended to take the Entrance Exam.
This exam includes blind tasting and a multiple choice exam covering the basic principles of grape growing and wine making, the major grape varietals, major appellations and current food and wine trends and issues. A minimum grade of 65% is required on this exam.
Prerequisites may be required for these courses. Please refer to individual course descriptions for specific requirements.
Important Notes
Applicants must be 19 years of age or older and have the ability to make necessary commitment of time for scheduled classes, the stage (work) experience, plus additional hours for self- study (15 hours is recommended).
Successful completion of each component leads to certification from Niagara College and Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers.
To meet the necessary requirements for certification, you will be required to attain a minimum grade of a 65% in all courses and pass the CAPS Certification exam with a minimum grade of 70%.
In the event you successfully complete all the course work at Niagara College, but fail to meet the certification exam requirement administered by CAPS, you will not receive certification until that requirement has been met.

Career Opportunities
This certificate prepares individuals for an exciting and rewarding career in the hospitality industry in the area of wine and beverage management, wine sales, wine marketing and all aspects of the wine service industry.
Possible career paths include:
The Niagara College CAPS graduate will have a recognized credential that enables him or her to claim professional expertise to manage a beverage program at a restaurant, hotel, resort, casino, tourist attraction or any situation in which beverage alcohol is a component of service.
Professional sommeliers often manage sales programs for import/export agencies, buy and sell for the provincial liquor authority or, where legal, open wine shops or restaurants of their own.
Many certified sommeliers also instruct courses in wine/beverage education, host wine tours abroad and develop curriculum and courses of study for wineries and training programs for restaurants, hotels and resorts.
Certificate Benefits
This certificate is an advanced program for the professional development of those wishing to be sommeliers and is offered in partnership with the Canadian Association of Professional Sommeliers (CAPS).
Upon successful completion of the certificate requirements, you will receive sommelier certification from CAPS and a joint certificate will be issued from Niagara College and CAPS.
Obtaining Your Certificate (Graduation)
Upon completion of all requirements, the student must complete an “application to graduate” form available from the Registrar’s Office. Students will be required to pay a $25 fee to attend the convocation ceremony in the fall.
The fee is payable with the “application to graduate” form. Applications and fees are to be returned to the Registrar’s Office. For more information, contact the Registrar’s Office.
