New year: new you?

If your New Year’s resolution was to ‘get in shape’ – the Fitness and Health Promotion program students at Niagara College are waiting to hear from you.

This program is offering up to 100 community members, and college staff and students the opportunity to work with a fitness trainer at the college’s Welland campus to improve personal wellness.

“Our clients will gain the advantage of learning to be more fit, in a free personalized program by students who are being trained to meet national industry standards,” said Michael Hart, program professor. “It’s great for both the students and the clients: students gain real-world experience to prepare them for a career in the industry, and clients benefit from a new level of wellness.”

Second-year NC students will be offering free personal fitness education and counselling, pre and post-fitness evaluations and exercise training for those who want to participate in this special program. The program also includes a weekly 50-minute training session each week for 12 weeks (from the end of January to April).

Interested persons are encouraged to apply for acceptance into this program and must meet participation requirements to be selected. Those who are selected as clients will be working with students from Niagara College’s fitness and health promotion program, under the supervision of college faculty.

Applicants who have been accepted will receive follow up information through email, said Hart.

Niagara College’s fitness and health promotion program is a two-year diploma program that trains students to meet the increased demand by consumers for qualified fitness professionals. Students have the opportunity to learn through applied education to achieve the status of certified personal trainer, authorized by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology.
