Niagara College’s Event Management (Graduate Certificate) program has been recognized with a prestigious Gold Pinnacle Award from the world’s leading professional association for festivals and events.
The Award was in the Best Event Management Certification Program category of International Festivals and Events Association (IFEA) Pinnacle Awards. It was presented September 21 at the IFEA’s 60th Anniversary Convention and Expo in Tucson, AZ.
“We take great pride in offering a high quality, comprehensive program of study that prepares our graduates for the rapidly-growing special event and festival sector,” said Christine Blane, professor and coordinator of NC’s Event Management program. “What makes our program unique is its intensive, hands-on nature. We’re very pleased to have earned recognition from the industry that our program serves.”
Niagara College’s Event Management (Graduate Certificate) program is an intensive, one-year program of study for students with previous post-secondary credentials. It provides graduates with the skills and knowledge required to plan, promote and run special events for the public, corporate and non-profit sectors.
The centerpiece of the Event Management program is the annual Many Hands project, where students in the program work with students in NC’s Construction Renovation Technician program to plan and execute a facility upgrade for a local non-profit agency. Since 1998, the project has supported 18 not-for-profit organizations. Earlier this month, the project earned a special recognition award from Big Brothers Big Sisters of South Niagara.
Additionally, as part of their studies, Event Management students plan and run a series of fundraisers in support of the Many Hands project. Last year students attempted a Guinness World Record for largest dessert party in support of Many Hands – the event drew 910 guests and raised $7,000.
This marks the third IFEA Pinnacle Award for the program; it received a Gold Award in 2012 and a Silver Award in 2009. Other postsecondary institutions receiving awards included Temple University in Philadelphia, PA, and Pai Chai University in South Korea.
Headquartered in Boise, ID, IFEA is the premier association supporting and enabling festival and event professionals worldwide. In partnership with global affiliates in Africa, Australia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and North America, the organization’s common vision is for a globally united industry that touches lives in a positive way through celebration.
