The importance of personal care and service were in the spotlight on June 19 as Niagara College welcomed 815 more students into its alumni community.
During the morning convocation ceremony Supt. Rose DiMarco director of operations Ontario Provincial Police Central Region addressed 340 new graduates from the School of Justice Studies.
“For those who do pursue a career in public service to affect positive change always remember the reason you chose that career. Strive to make a difference in everything you do” she said.
DiMarco shared her recipe for successful leadership with the new graduates including teamwork life-long learning perseverance integrity trust and respect.
“Some of the most natural and capable leaders that I have worked with have never competed for promotion but anyone including me would have followed them anywhere” she said. “Never stop learning from each other. Always know that your education will not end here today. Embrace continuous learning for both your professional and personal growth.”
DiMarco who graduated from the College’s Law and Security program in 1985 received a Distinguished Alumni Award during the ceremony.
Dr. Valerie Jaeger medical officer of health Niagara Region Public Health addressed more than 475 new graduates from the College’s School of Nursing and Personal Support Worker Studies and Allied Health Studies at the afternoon ceremony. She emphasized the importance of the ‘care’ component healthcare as students embark on careers in the field.
“I can assure you that people will know you and remember you … because they thought you cared” she said. “Actual one-on-one care will never be out of date.”
Dr. Jaeger received an Honorary Diploma in Health Studies during the ceremony.
More than 3700 students graduated this week during the college’s Spring Convocation Ceremonies. Held at the College’s Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus the ceremonies kicked off on June 16 with Janet St. Amand chief executive officer of YMCA Niagara (10 a.m.); and Debi Pratt wine industry leader and public relations specialist (3 p.m.). Speakers throughout the week included Bob McNeil president and general manager of Inc. (June 17 10 a.m.); Dave Maciulis principal of Natural Landscape Group and publisher/editor-in-chief of Outdoor Lifestyle Magazine (June 17 3 p.m.); Chris Sinclair vice president and co-founder of Brand Blvd. Inc. (June 18 10 a.m.); and Andrew Miele director of development Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts (June 19. 3 p.m.).
