College’s culinary event to showcase Niagara region chefs


Four of Niagara’s finest chefs one unforgettable experience. That’s what’s on the menu at Niagara College’s Canadian Food and Wine Institute as a rare dining event for guests serves up a valuable learning opportunity for students.


On January 10 the Canadian Food and Wine Institute will shine the spotlight on the culinary talents of visiting chefs Justin Downes of Vineland Estates Catherine O’Donnell of Willow Cakes and Pastries Anthony Greco of Zest Restaurant and Therese Degrace of The Good Earth Food and Wine Co. for a Niagara Region Chefs dining event.


To be held at the college’s Benchmark Restaurant located at the college’s Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus the sold-out event is part of the CFWI’s celebrated Chef Signature Series. The series offers guests an opportunity to savour cuisine from a variety of prominent chefs in a single sitting – like visiting several different restaurants at once – while giving Niagara College culinary students unparalleled industry experience on-campus.


“The Chef Signature Series is bringing the industry to the Canadian Food and Wine Institute. Our culinary students will have the extraordinary opportunity of learning from a multitude of top chefs over the span of the series” said Craig Youdale dean of the CFWI. “Our students will not only be exposed to the different styles and personalities of some of the most prominent chefs in Niagara Canada and the United States; they will have a chance to work with them and get a real taste for the industry.”


The Niagara Region Chefs event is the third installment of the CFWI’s 2014-2015 Chef Signature Series. The series kicked off on Nov. 12 with celebrity chef Vikram Vij and continued Dec. 13 2014 with a CFWI Christmas featuring the college’s chef professors. Upcoming events include Ottawa Chefs on January 31 and New York vs. Chicago on March 21 2015.


The Canadian Food and Wine Institute located on Niagara College’s Niagara-on-the-Lake Campus is the college’s centre for food wine and beer education. It is home to Benchmark the college’s teaching restaurant as well as the Teaching Winery and Teaching Brewery. It is also home to Junior Culinary Team Canada to represent our nation at the 2016 World Culinary Olympics.


Niagara College offers more than 100 diploma bachelor degree and advanced level programs at campuses in Welland Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Falls; as well as more than 600 credit vocational and general interest Continuing Education courses.
