NC professor recognized for mentorship

Janet JakobsenNiagara College professor Janet Jakobsen has been recognized by one of Canada’s leading travel and event magazines for her ongoing contributions to the events industry.

Jakobsen was among this year’s inductees to Meetings + Incentive Travel’s Hall of Fame as the 2014 Industry Mentor. The honour recognizes an individual whose expertise professional influence or academic position has provided others with the opportunity inspiration or ability to pursue excellence.

“Throughout her career Janet has advised and aided countless colleagues students and even bosses” said Robin Paisley general manager IncentiveWorks. “And in turn they have helped her. Mentoring she has learned is non-directional; it is not defined by time by age or by years of experience but it is always rewarding. We are delighted to welcome her into the Hall of Fame.”

“To be recognized by industry colleagues and former team members is both humbling and gratifying” said Jakobsen. “Mentoring to me is a form of philanthropy; and like philanthropy the reward is actually enjoyed more by the giver than the receiver.”

Jakobsen teaches in Niagara College’s Bachelor of Applied Business – Hospitality Operations Management and Event Management (Graduate Certificate) programs where future hospitality and tourism professionals and event managers benefit from her extensive knowledge and experience. She is a fifth-generation hotelier who brings more than 25 years of hospitality experience to the classroom including positions with Fairmont Hotels the Metro Toronto Convention Centre Delta Hotels and Resorts and others. She has also provided consulting services to several high-profile organizations including the Schulich School of Business York University and Metropolitan Hotels. She is an active volunteer with industry and charitable organizations a contributor to industry publications and a frequent speaker at industry association and corporate events.

“Our students benefit from dedicated educators like Janet who bring valuable real-world experience to the classroom while maintaining close ties to industry” said Vivian Kinnaird Niagara College’s dean of business hospitality and environmental. “We congratulate her on this recognition – it’s well-earned.”
