Niagara College’s Student Administrative Council (NCSAC) is launching a new breakfast program this month to help take a bite out of student hunger.
Called Rise and Shine the student-driven initiative will be offered twice a week to help students begin the day with a healthy meal. It will be open to any student on campus – without any tracking of student numbers – in an effort to deliver the program in an accessible non-intimidating manner and alleviate the stigma of accessing the service.
NCSAC launched Rise and Shine as a response to the increase in the number of students who have been turning to its Student Emergency Food Bank over the past few years.
“The Rise and Shine program complements all our other efforts surrounding mental health and well-being on campus. So many students do not or are unable to kickstart their day with something in their stomachs” said NCSAC president Shane Malcolm. “The Rise and Shine program was dreamed up out of a desire to provide our students with a healthy pick-me-up in the morning and frankly if we can alleviate one less burden or worry for our students we have done our jobs in supporting their needs.”
As part of the Rise and Shine program a continental breakfast will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. at the Welland and Niagara-on-the-Lake campuses (The Core in Welland and The Armory in NOTL). The program will run from Sept. 9 to April 16 2015 (excluding dates when classes are not scheduled).
