Around the Canadian Table dishes support for NC students

Long-time Niagara College supporters Les Marmitons Niagara have established an event that promises guests a truly unique culinary experience while generating important support for the next generation of Canadian chefs hospitality professionals winemakers and brewers.

Around the Canadian Table an evening of food wine conversation and music takes place at Jackson-Triggs Winery on Saturday August 2 in conjunction with Food Day Canada – an annual celebration of Canadian food. Guests will enjoy seasonal dishes prepared by a team of top Niagara chefs paired with fine VQA wines from Jackson-Triggs Inniskillin and Le Clos Jordanne. The roster of participating chefs offers a cross-section of Niagara’s culinary leaders many with a strong Niagara College connection including Jeff Stewart NC’s associate dean of Hospitality and Tourism; NC chef/professor Mark Picone NC culinary graduates Anthony Greco (Zest); John Horne (Canoe); and Tim Mackiddie (Great Estates of Niagara); along with Erik Peacock (Wellington Court); David Watt (co-owner Zest and The Garrison House); Andrew McLeod (formerly of Spencer’s on the Waterfront); and Anna Olson (Food Network Canada).

Anita Stewart founder of Food Day Canada and Food Laureate at the University of Guelph will lead the “Canadian Table Conversation” along with an all-star panel of chefs food producers and educators including Inniskillin co-founder Donald Ziraldo; Karen Whitty (Whitty Farms); Craig Youdale (dean Niagara College’s Canadian Food and Wine Institute); and Niagara College chef/professor Michael Olson.

The evening is capped off with performances by renowned Canadian musicians Kevin Breit and Mark Lalama.

“Les Marmitons recognizes the important role that today’s culinary wine and beer students will play in Niagara’s growth as a world-class culinary destination and we’re very proud to support their educational journey with this unique event” said Ross Macfarlane founding president of Les Marmitons Niagara. “Around the Canadian Table is an opportunity to experience and celebrate the wonderful tastes of Niagara with some of Canada’s top chefs food producers and educators.”

Proceeds from the event will be added to Les Marmitons’ trust fund at Niagara College which provides bursaries for students in four programs: Culinary Skills – Chef Training; Hospitality Management – Hotel and Restaurant; Brewmaster and Brewery Operations Management; and Winery  and Viticulture Technician. Tickets for the entire evening including dinner wine pairings with dinner entertainment and dessert reception with Icewine are $175. Additional tickets are available for entertainment and dessert reception with Icewine for $75. Additional wines are available during the entertainment for a nominal fee.

Les Marmitons is a gastronomic and social club of gentlemen who share a common interest in fine food wine and the culinary arts. Through regular gatherings members gain knowledge and experience in the preparation and presentation of various fine cuisines under the direction of a specially selected professional chef. Since forming as a chapter in 2005 Les Marmitons Niagara has held an annual fundraising dinner at Niagara College and has raised more than $150000 in a permanent endowed bursary fund at Niagara College.

Niagara College offers more than 100 diploma bachelor degree and advanced level programs at campuses in Welland Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Falls; as well as more than 600 credit vocational and general interest Continuing Education courses.
