Events support student-led youth centre renovation

As students from Niagara College’s Construction Studies program work to renovate Vineland’s Upper Deck Youth Centre before the final reveal next month NC’s Event Management (Graduate Certificate) students have a variety of fundraisers planned for throughout the Niagara region to support the project.

There are five upcoming fundraising events being held to support the project including: Many Soup for Many Hands on March 15 Many Bands for Many Hands on March 20 Death by Trivia on March 21 Runway Art Hair on March 29 Solving Niagara on April 5 and the Reveal Day Street Festival on April 12. “This year’s Many Hands project is a wonderful example of youth helping youth as our students work to renovate and fundraise to support the Upper Deck Youth Centre and gain valuable real-world experience in the process” said Shelley Merlo professor and coordinator of NC’s Event Management program. “We hope the community will support these wonderful events that our students have planned to raise funds for a worthy cause in Niagara.”

This is the 17th annual Many Hands project at Niagara College which sees a local not-for-profit agency undergo a series of renovations performed mainly by students in the College’s construction programs coordinated and supported by students in the Event Management (Graduate Certificate) program.

This year’s project recipient the Upper Deck Youth Centre is an inclusive facility that provides a welcoming environment where young people receive assistance interact with others and are mentored by trained adults who help them reach their full potential.

The Many Hands project at Upper Deck was launched in January 2014 and construction is on schedule. During the next couple of weeks students will work on installing cabinets and floors Their handiwork will be unveiled at a Reveal Day event on April 12.

Niagara College offers more than 100 diploma bachelor degree and advanced level programs at campuses in Welland Niagara-on-the-Lake and Niagara Falls; as well as more than 600 credit vocational and general interest Continuing Education courses. Areas of specialization include food and wine sciences advanced technology media applied health and community safety supported by unique learning enterprises in food wine beer horticulture and esthetics. Many Bands for Many Hands

This benefit concert features high-octane performances by garage rock sensation Bootleg Glory indie rock phenomenon Thought Beneath Film and indie folk pop-inspired Trouble and Daughter.

Solving Niagara

Clifton Hill Niagara Falls / Boston Pizza
An exciting Amazing Race-style scavenger hunt event on Clifton Hill Niagara Falls. Each team must complete different challenges to receive a clue and move on to the next challenge. The event will conclude with a celebration at Boston Pizza. Prizes will be awarded for first second and third place as well as teams who raised the most money. Participants can register online in teams of two. Registration fee is $35 per person and includes: the race after party at Boston Pizza SWAG bag and a chance to win prizes.

Reveal Day Street Festival
Saturday April 12 2014 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Upper Deck Youth Centre 3446 Rittenhouse Rd. Vineland  
Reveal day festivities will include a ribbon cutting ceremony tours of the newly renovated facilities and fun activities for the whole family to enjoy. Activities include an inflatable obstacle course face painting dance lessons and so much more. There will also be a used clothing sale with all proceeds going towards the Upper Deck Youth Centre. New and gently used clothing donations are still being accepted.
