School of General Studies

Welland and Niagara-on-the-Lake Campuses

The School of General Studies has professional staff dedicated to developing and delivering curriculum for tomorrow’s skills.

The School of General Studies provides a broad range of educational choices for students including specific certificate and diploma programs, customized college or university preparation in the arts and science areas.

The School is structured around four key areas: General Education and Liberal Studies; Humanities and Social Sciences; General Arts and Science; and Pre-Health Sciences.

The School of General Studies delivers a comprehensive curriculum of both service and general education courses to all programs throughout the college including courses in student development, philosophy, psychology, sociology, history, foreign languages, biology, chemistry, physics, and others.

At Niagara College, we believe that general education is an essential and integral component of students' learning; therefore, we ensure that general education courses remain a significant component in post-secondary curriculum consistent with both the policy originally expressed in General Education in Ontario’s Community Colleges (1996) and the current Ministry policies.

In a related context, many universities make decisions regarding transferability of credits based on the number of general education or liberal studies credits earned. The School of General Studies is responsible for ensuring that post secondary programs include required general education courses.

Please review the Niagara College Transfer Guide section for more information.

General education courses explore issues of societal concern in a manner relevant to the lives of students. Courses are structured to provide historical context, theoretical foundation, and personal application and meaning. Further, they provide benefits to students’ personal growth and enrichment, informed citizenship, and working lives.

General Arts and Science is a suite of diploma and certificate programs that provide students with access to a variety of post-secondary studies. More specifically, its programs and services open opportunities to students who lack specific academic requirements or preparation for success in college or to students who wish to explore their educational and vocational interests more fully before making firm decisions about future careers.

General Arts and Science includes the following programs:
