Web Site Accessibility

The Niagara College web site has been upgraded in order to more closely follow both W3C and CSS standards as well to address issues of special needs accessibility. From this time forward, the site will be developed using W3C and CSS standards, not merely browser standards. This means that end users should upgrade their browsers to those that fully support both valid HTML code and CSS layout. Further development will be focused on being standards compliant, not browser compliant. Hence, users with older browsers may find that they may wish to upgrade to a standards compliant browser.

Current Web Browser Testing

The following browsers have been utilized in testing the current site design and are recommended for best viewing of Niagara College web pages:

  • Internet Explorer 8+ (Windows)
  • Mozilla Firefox 3.6+ (Windows)
  • Safari 4+ (Windows / Mac)
  • Google Chrome 5+

Visitors using any other unsupported legacy browsers are strongly urged to upgrade to any of the above browsers for best viewing of the Niagara College web site pages.

Multimedia Features

While the majority of the Niagara College web site pages are comprised of text content, some features may also include multimedia content such as photo galleries, audio, and streaming video broadcasts.

Note that these multimedia features may require Adobe Flash / Shockwave technologies and may also require that any Pop-up or Flash Ad Blockers to be disabled. Rich media such as audio and streaming video are best enjoyed using a broadband web connection.

Screen Resolution

The current design scheme has been crafted to fit comfortably within the width of 1024 pixel resolution settings. Pages will not grow wider in larger resolutions, but instead will rest comfortably within this size limit.

Validation

Every effort has been made to ensure that all newly developed sections of the Niagara College web site will comply with valid HTML 4.0 and CSS standards. In addition, efforts will be made to ensure that all newly developed sections comply with Section 508 Accessibility standards. Existing sections will continue to be enhanced until all pages on the Niagara College web site meet W3C, CSS and Section 508 compliancy.

Special Features for Users with Special Needs

Since site development is more than just complying with web standards, the Niagara College web site will also be undergoing a number of accessibility upgrades targetted to those with special navigational and browsing considerations. This will include those who use screen readers, who require keyboard navigation, or who need customized stylesheet settings in order to assist with overcoming moderate visual impairment. These efforts will be ongoing.

Print Friendly

With the exception of the home page itself, all pages on the Niagara College web site include separate CSS settings that enable print friendly ability for all pages. Just print. The web site top masthead will automatically strip away and colours will adjust for optimum print styling.
