Health & Community Studies :
Niagara College offers health and community studies faculty and students the opportunity to work with local industry partners on real-world projects through course-based assignments and applied research initiatives.
The applied research in this area has been limited, due in part to poor access to funding that would support social science research in colleges. However, Niagara has an impressive infrastructure to support applied research in areas of health, safety and security, including dental laboratories, a Children’s Safety Village, paramedic and practical nursing labs, and computing expertise and infrastructure.
Areas of research interest include the implementation of new practices in community and health settings, capacity building in the voluntary sector, research into community safety, and the evaluation of community social programs. Recently the College has begun to work with Brock University on areas in which Niagara has expertise, for example, dental health.
Niagara College has a long history of involvement with the voluntary sector through its Centre for Community Leadership. Niagara College has begun the establishment of an Interprofessional Health Education Institute, funded by Health Force Ontario. This institute and its partners from the Niagara health community plan research initiatives related to healthy aging and community health.
